Job Summary
The genetic counselor provides genetic counseling and genetic risk assessment services to individuals with a personal and/or family history of hereditary disease or disorders. These referrals come from a variety of internal and external sources. In some instances, the counselor may work in a multi-disciplinary manner with other Greenville Health System providers. The genetic counselor will provide community and health care provider education and will work to develop the genetic counseling program and referral base.
The genetic counselor must be able to work with patients who have diverse cultural backgrounds, diverse life experience, education levels, life styles and socioeconomic statuses. Sensitivity and the ability to work with patients confidentially and positively are essential.
Knowledge of health care systems, health insurance authorization processes, community resources and the ability to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team are essential skills and knowledge required for this genetic counselor position
Accountabilities
- Develops, implements, and maintains prenatal genetic counseling services
• Provides genetic risk assessments
• Facilitates genetic testing process, including informed consent and discloses results to patient
• Counsels patients and family members by providing information, education, or reassurance regarding genetic risks and inherited conditions
• Communicates all genetic test results, risk estimates, and standard recommendations to patient and any referring physicians
• Documents other patient interactions as appropriate
• Collaborates and coordinates patient care with other disciplines and medical specialties
• Responds to relevant inquiries from patients, staff and physicians
• Collaborates with other health care professionals to provide genetic counseling/testing services to patients, when necessary - 75%
• Assists with research protocols when applicable - 1%
• Assists with development of marketing materials and programs for various audiences when applicable - 1%
• Seeks out and presents educational activities to patients, families, trainees, multidisciplinary groups within Prisma Health Upstate, and on the local, state or national level - 8%
• Keeps abreast of developments in genetics and genomics -2%
• Coordinates schedule for various sites such as Anderson MFM office - 2%
• Serves as direct line for staff communication of genetic counseling-related issues and communicates necessary topics to management. Partners with management to ensure quality clinical genetic services - 3%
• Develops, implements, and maintains training program for clinical rotation of genetic counseling students. Participates in training and education of medical students, residents and Maternal Fetal Medicine fellows - 5%
• Actively supports policies, procedures and culture of Prisma Health Upstate - 3%
Supervisory/Management Responsibilities
This is a non-management job that will report to a supervisor, manager, director or executive.
Minimum Requirements
• Master's Degree - From Accredited Genetic Counseling program
• No previous experience - Preferred but not required
Required Certifications, Registrations, Licenses
• Board Certification or Board Eligibility by the American Board of Genetic Counseling
Knowledge, Skills or Abilities
• 1-5 years of experience in genetics - highly preferred
• Strong written/verbal communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients, co-workers, referring physician groups, and internal physicians
• Excellent problem solving and organizational skills
• Ability to work efficiently and effectively both autonomously and as a member of a team
Strong computer and systems skills
Knowledge, Skills or Abilities
• Basic and proficient computer skills (word processing)
• Knowledge of office equipment (fax/copier)
• Mathematical skills
• Pedigree construction
• Clinical consult notes
