Job Overview The position of freelance meteorologist is responsible for the timely and topical content of station weather casts on-air and on our digital platforms. This position issues warnings and alerts, produces graphics and maps, and reports live during weather events. This position requires availability nights, weekends, and holidays as needed. Job Responsibilities
• Forecast, produce and present clear and concise weather casts which tell a story and connect with listeners.
• Schedule will require performance of duties to support a 24/7/365 newsroom, including but not limited to nights, weekends, holidays, and/or early mornings.
• Effectively utilize social media, during severe weather and everyday situations, as well as writing timely and topical weather stories.
• Work with producers and fellow meteorologists to determine relevant weather content in breaking news and everyday situations, doing scheduled live and recorded reports.
• This position will require work with remote audio equipment, wi-fi connections and computer software to study reports.
Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Meteorology, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work related experience.
• 2-3 years professional on-air broadcasting experience (radio or television preferred)
• Experience writing, producing and performing radio news reports.
• Proven on-air experience in handling breaking news and severe weather coverage
• An AMS seal or the CBM from the American Meteorological Society is preferred.
• Experience with computer graphics and radar.
• Excellent weather and news judgment.
• Ability to tell a compelling weather story
• Ability to think critically, quick and effective decision making and live ad-libbing.
• Ability to work well under pressure while meeting daily assigned deadlines.
• Must be flexible to work any assigned shift including nights, weekends, and holidays.
• This position will require work with remote audio equipment, wi-fi connections and computer access to write and/or produce reports.
• Must have a valid driver's license and safe driving history as determined by the Company. Driving record will be checked.
• Demo reel or online portfolio required.
