• GRU-WATER/WASTEWATER SYSTEMS **** THIS IS ONLY OPEN TO CURRENT CITY OF GAINESVILLE EMPLOYEES WHO ARE IN THE GRU-WATER/WASTEWATER DEPARMENT. ** This is advanced technical and supervisory work directing employees engaged in water/wastewater construction and maintenance activities. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma, and five years progressively responsible experience in construction and maintenance of water/wastewater systems, including three years supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. LICENSES/CERTIFICATES: Must have a Class “A” Wastewater Collection Technician Certificate. A CDL License is required at the time of appointment. NOTES: Must meet Craft & Safety Training established for job classifications by departmental standards or pass departmental equivalency test. May be required to work unscheduled and emergency overtime. Work requires physical strength and agility. Work may require exposure to hazardous conditions and noxious chemicals. Work may require performance of tasks outdoors under varying climatic conditions. Work may require exposure to prolonged high noise levels.

NATURE OF WORK
Advanced technical and supervisory work directing employees engaged in water/wastewater construction and maintenance activities.
CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS
Positions allocated to this classification report to a designated supervisor and work under limited supervision. Work in this class is distinguished from higher classes by its lack of management responsibility and from lower classes by its supervisory responsibility and advanced technical skills.
Minimum Requirements
Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma, and five years progressively responsible experience in construction and maintenance of water/wastewater systems, including three years supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATES
1A CDL instructional permit may be required at the time of appointment and a CDL License may be required within six months of date of appointment (depending on job assignment and work location).*

Job Description
EXAMPLES OF WORK**
Essential Job Functions
Supervises installation, maintenance, and repair of water/wastewater mains and appurtenances.
Estimates material and equipment needs.
Supervise, plans and coordinates work of subordinates.
Keeps records of labor and materials.
Contacts public in areas where crews and equipment are working. Arranges for machinery and men to trespass on property when necessary. Explains nature of work being performed to property owners.
Insures that safety precautions for crews and public are enforced.
Oversees emergency and large-scale repair projects. Inspects materials, equipment, and supplies.
Repairs, tests, and maintains all types of backflow prevention devices.
Insures all equipment is in good working order and that it receives routine and major maintenance.
Attends work on continuous and regular basis.
Non-essential Job Functions
May be required to supervise employees designated as performing “safety sensitive” functions, for purposes of the Drug Free Workplace Program, depending on job assignment and work location.
May be responsible for enforcing the drug policy, based on physical location and organizational structure.
May be required to transport, mix, handle or use hazardous materials (other than cans of gasoline, batteries, pumping fuel or access to normal janitorial cleaning materials) or may be responsible for facilities or equipment carrying current, fluids or gas that could endanger the public or other employees.
Will be required to respond under emergency conditions.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
SELECTION FACTORS
Thorough knowledge of materials, methods, and equipment used in water/wastewater line construction and maintenance.
Thorough knowledge of water/wastewater systems of the City, including location and size of mains, hydrants, valves, and backflow prevention devices.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and accident prevention methods in assigned area of responsibility.
Ability to plan, direct and supervise work of others.
Ability to train and instruct personnel.
Ability to keep records and make reports.
Ability to work effectively with coworkers and the general public.
