General Description Highly skilled and technical position performing independent advanced mechanical work in the maintenance, repair, installation, testing and fueling of City-Owned permanent diesel, propane and natural gas generators and emergency installed temporary generators.
Essential Job Functions • Independently inspects, diagnoses, and performs all phases of independent skilled maintenance on varying makes and models of generators.
• Performs repairs and services on all makes and models of generator sets.
• Performs inspections, repairs, services, and start-up load bank test requirements on equipment.
• Troubleshoots equipment and services generator components including alternators, wiring harnesses safety devices, shutdown switches, and battery systems.
• Applies proper engine technical skills in inspection, disassembly, failure analysis, assembly, diagnosis, and engine operating performance tests.
• Identifies problems and cause of failure through logical troubleshooting steps, determine corrective action through inspection of failed parts.
• Determines most cost effective and efficient plan for either new installation or repair of existing generator systems including finding required parts and obtaining all necessary quotes.
• Refers to electrical diagrams, technical manuals, parts manuals, established codes and procedural references for the purpose of ensuring accuracy and code compliance in task performance.
• Performs various record maintenance duties, i.e., work descriptions, parts inventory and supplies per work order. Logs work and materials in computer system.
• Performs full-load bank testing on generator sets to ensure operation and reliability of equipment.
• Must be available to be on-call for emergency services and report during emergency activations in response to storms or other needs.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Demonstrated ability to read electrical wiring diagrams and schematics. Ability to maintain records electronically. Interpreting electrical and mechanical drawings. Identifying and repairing problems with engine control systems. Interpreting schematic diagrams and wiring.
Education, Experience, Licenses and Certifications Education and Experience:
• High School Diploma or GED
• Six (6) years of related experience with the operations, preventative and corrective maintenance and repair of varying generators
(A comparable amount of relevant training, education and/or experience may be substituted for the above qualifications.)
Licenses and Certifications:
· Must possess a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
Electrical license preferred.
