Description
Under general supervision, the Fire Equipment Mechanic II performs major and minor repairs on various types of gasoline, hybrid and diesel powered equipment; performs related work as required.
SALARY: $24.86 - $26.05 hourly
EDUCATIONAL INCENTIVE: Possible educational incentive of 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% based on completion of Associate’s/Bachelor’s/Master’s degree. Possible certification incentive of 2%, 3% or 5% based on completion of Level I, II or II ASE Certifications.
AGENCY/DEPARTMENT: Fire Protection District
Fire Equipment Mechanics are represented by the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE), LOCAL 501 and are eligible for overtime compensation.
The eligible list established for this position may be used to fill existing and future regular, temporary, fixed-term, intermittent and extra-help positions within the Fire Protection District. There is currently one (1) vacancy.

Examples Of Duties
Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
Light/Medium Equipment
• Performs repairs, maintenance, modifications, and inspections on various automobiles and light trucks, including gasoline, hybrid and diesel powered equipment;
• Performs repairs and maintenance on various types of mechanical and electrical equipment utilized by the Fire Protection District such as emergency generators, breathing air units, fire pumps, foam delivery systems, cranes, and emergency lighting systems;
• Examines and locates mechanical defects in a wide variety of Fire District vehicles and equipment; reads and interprets technical manuals and plumbing and electrical schematics;
• Performs repairs, maintenance, modifications, and inspections on various dual-rear axle, medium-duty trucks;
• Examines, locates, and repairs defects in various vehicle braking systems, including ABS, hydraulic, and air-assisted systems;
• May operate Fuel Tender during emergency incidents;
• Performs welding as necessary to make repairs or modification to equipment;
• Maintains records on all repairs;
• May teach specialized training courses, such as OSHA forklift operations courses, as needed;
• May make recommendations regarding vehicle replacements and parts allocations.
Heavy Equipment
• Performs repairs, maintenance and modifications on heavy equipment, such as fire engines, tanker trucks, dump trucks, light buses, construction vehicles, and hand-crew vehicles;
• Performs diagnosis and repairs on air braking systems;
• Examines and locates mechanical defects in a wide variety of heavy equipment; reads and interprets technical manuals and plumbing and electrical schematics;
• Examines, locates, and repairs mechanical and structural defects in aerial ladder equipment;
• Inspects and operates heavy equipment.
• Operates Fuel Tender during emergency incidents;
• Maintains records on all repairs;
• Performs welding and uses machine tools as necessary to fabricate and repair metal components.
Typical Qualifications
These are entrance requirements to the examination process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.
County Agency/Departmental Service: Currently working as a regular employee in the Fire Protection District with the County of Ventura. Note: Regular employee means one who has been appointed from an eligible list to an allocated position in the County Service.
Education/Experience: A minimum of two (2) years as a Fire Equipment Mechanic I with the Fire Protection District or a minimum of two years of recent experience performing repairs and maintenance on gasoline and diesel powered automobiles, light trucks, and/or heavy equipment , and has included specialized training in the diagnosis and repair of fire pumps and related equipment.
Must possess a valid California Class A Driver License. Must also possess a Fork Lift Operator certification.
Desirable certifications include: State Fire Marshal Fire Equipment Mechanic I and II; ASE Master Truck Technician; and Air Brake Certification.
Supplemental Information
This position requires the full range of mobility to perform maintenance and repair duties including fire line assignments and working in hazardous and/or emergency situations while providing fueling and repair services to fire equipment. Ability to work on-call and rotating shifts in order to respond to emergency situations.
