Description
The Annex is a partnership of the Palos Verdes Library District (PVLD) and Freedom4U, opened in September of 2006. Its mission is to provide students in grades 6 – 12 with a supervised, dedicated space that complements the services of the Peninsula Center Library and Freedom4U’s programs.
The Annex Library Assistant participates fully in all library related operations of the Annex including customer service, reference and reader’s advisory, circulation, and security. The Annex Library Assistant will be in charge of the Annex in the absence of the Annex Librarian.
The Annex is open and operated by PVLD Monday through Thursday, 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Required to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Examples of Duties
Management And Leadership
Core accountabilities include, but are not limited to:
• Facilitate all Annex operations in the absence of the Annex Librarian
• Communicate issues, challenges and updates regularly to Annex Librarian, YA Librarian, YR Manager and PVLD and Freedom4U personnel
• Handle problem behaviors and disciplinary issues; refer major problems to Security or PC librarians as necessary
Circulation
• Supervise and participate in circulation activities such as patron registration, checking in and out of materials, collection of fines and fees, and shelving.
• Check ID of Annex users and assist them with the sign in and out process
• Assist patrons in the use of library resources and facilities
• Provide reference and reader's advisory service
• Assist patrons with PCs and gaming equipment
• Provide simple computer trouble-shooting
• Maintain and operate audio-visual equipment
• Assist with patron complaints about circulation matters and interprets library policy
• Assist patrons with more difficult circulation-related problems and complaints; investigate and resolve disputed accounts; provide basic assistance to patrons, answer non-reference questions.
• Ensure that all new and returned library materials are shelved accurately and in a timely fashion.
• Relocate or reorganize library materials as necessary to ensure adequate shelf space or to support collection development and access goals.
Collection Development
• Offer suggestions for purchase to Annex Librarian and YA Librarian
• Assist with books to be discarded or mended.
• Prepare library exhibits and displays.
Programming
• May create materials such as fliers, pathfinders, or booklists.
• Assist YA Librarian with programming and PTAC meetings.
• May plan programs & group activities for teens.
Customer Service
• Provide a high level of all aspects of customer service
• Offer polite and accurate responses to questions about Annex policies, procedures, services, programs and events
• Offer polite and accurate responses to questions about District policies, procedures, services, programs and events.
• Offer polite and accurate responses to questions about Freedom4U services, programs and events.
• Assist patrons with circulation or programming related problems and complaints.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
Demonstrates effective interpersonal relations with young adults and other professionals who work with young adults. Has knowledge of current reading, viewing, and listening interests of young adults. Knowledge of the principles and practices of modern library systems and programs, particularly related to needs of middle and high school students
Possesses excellent customer service skills. Communicates effectively orally and in writing. Attention to detail and ability to follow procedures consistently. Ability to do simple library research; to operate and maintain audio-visual equipment; carry out assignments independently; effectively use computer applications such as word processing, calendar and email.
Education and/or Experience
Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary. Example combinations include:
AA or equivalent coursework or within one (1) year of completion and preferably one year of related Library experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Supplemental Information
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. This classification requires continuous walking between work areas and prolonged standing in work areas. Finger, hand, and arm dexterity is needed to retrieve, process, and store library materials, and well as to enter and retrieve data using a computer keyboard, typewriter keyboard, or calculator and to operate standard office equipment. Positions in this classification frequently bend, stoop, kneel, and reach, as well as push and pull heavy book carts of up to 100 pounds and to retrieve and store materials. Positions in this classification frequently lift and carry library materials that typically weigh less than 50 pounds.
ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS
Employees work in an office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Occasionally, incumbents may have to visit other branch libraries to retrieve materials and may be exposed to inclement weather conditions and hot and cold temperatures. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
The following list is based on the MOU dated June 25, 2008, for the period beginning July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2013.
Holidays: (7 days)
New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day without pay.
Part-time hourly employees may request one (1) week's leave without pay after six (6) months of employment. After one year, such employees may request annual leave without pay up to a maximum of two (2) weeks. The Supervisor based upon the needs of the District will approve such requests.
Medical, Dental, Vision: All part-time employees who work a minimum of 17 hours per week may purchase any of the current medical benefits and shall pay the entire premium themselves through an automatic payroll deduction.
