ATTENTION APPLICANTS: This vacancy is being announced at two different job classes at the same time: Engineer 2 Graduate and Engineer Senior. One (1) position is being filled; the final class, and starting salary are dependent on the successful applicant’s qualifications. There is only one Job ID for this vacancy, and you will be considered for the highest classification for which you qualify.
The selected candidate will have the option to report to one of the following locations: Mankato, New Ulm or Hutchinson. The specific location will be agreed upon at time of selection.

The DNR is currently seeking to hire one (1) Engineer. This position is responsible for performing engineering tasks requiring the application of technical skills and knowledge obtained through formal engineering training. Work assignments will include the development and preparation of construction plans and specifications, performance of field surveys and date collection, construction inspection and contract administration. This position serves as an independent Project Manager for projects. Duties include development and administration of RFPs; consultant selection and management of consultant contracts; design and construction of projects including civil components of roads, bridges, recreational trails, water accesses, water control structures, retaining walls, civil aspects of ecological restoration, and other related work.
Responsibilities include:
• Assure responsibility for safety and accountability for safety performance so that employee will perform tasks according to established safety procedures and reduce injuries and equipment damage.
• Prepare and develop feasibility studies, designs, construction plans, specifications, and contract documents for civil engineering infrastructure and multi-disciplinary projects.
• Serve as the project manager for civil engineering and multi-disciplinary projects.
• Administer assigned construction contracts so that they are executed properly and completed on time Perform assigned activities as necessary to maintain the effectiveness of Statewide Engineering Unit operations, as well as execution of special duties for the DNR so that emergencies and unique situations receive the engineering expertise they require.
This position has a flexible work arrangement and may be eligible to telework on a full or part-time basis which is subject to change. If approved, the employee would be required to complete a telework agreement.
Minimum Qualifications
Engineer 2 Graduate:
• Ability to obtain a Fundamentals of Engineering Certification (FE) within 1 year of hire. **It is expected that a successful candidate will sit for the Professional Engineer exam within 5-6 years.**
• Two years post-graduation civil engineering work.
Engineer Senior:
• Licensed as a Professional Civil Engineer with the Minnesota Board of Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying, Landscape Architecture, Geoscience and Interior Design (AELSLAGID) or ability to obtain licensure through reciprocity.
At either level, experience/education must include:
• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline from an ABET accredited college or university.
• Knowledge and experience in a variety of Civil Engineering design, contract administration, and general construction practices.
• Ability to draft drawings using AutoCad Civil 3D, or similar drafting software.
• Ability to prepare specifications for field construction purposes.
• Knowledge of materials used in the construction of roads, water control structures, dams, bridges, and other structures in order to design cost effective projects and arrive at valid cost estimates.
• Skill in oral and written communications, speeches, writing reports, and answering correspondence regarding projects. Communication with vendors and/or contractors by telephone or written means is vital to project success.
• Functional knowledge of AutoCad Civil 3D, ArcGIS, hydrologic and hydraulic software, and Microsoft Office.
Preferred Qualifications
• Possession of a Fundamentals of Engineering Certification (FE).
• Design and production level proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D along with Civil Engineering Software programs such as Hydrocad, HY-8, Arc-GIS or other comparable programs.
• Project Management Experience serving clients in the public sector.
• Construction Stormwater certifications including SWPPP Designer and SWPPP Management.
• Proficiency in using Total Station and GNSS/RTK survey equipment.
• Experience in the following:
• AutoCAD Civil 3D
• ArcGIS
• Hydrologic and hydraulic modeling
Additional Requirements
This position requires an unrestricted Class D Driver's license with a clear driving record.
