Description
The primary duty of a District Attorney Investigator is the vigorous and fair investigation of criminal and civil cases within the jurisdiction of the District Attorney’s Office. Under general supervision, the Investigator II assists in obtaining, preserving and reporting admissible evidence for presentation in cases prosecuted by the District Attorney’s Office; performs difficult criminal and civil investigations for the District Attorney’s Office, Sheriff’s Office, Municipal Police Agencies, and the Grand Jury; and performs related work as required.
SALARY: $33.70 - $47.25 per hour
EDUCATIONAL INCENTIVE: Possible educational incentive of $290 per month for possession of an intermediate POST certificate and $435 per month for possession of an advanced POST certificate.
The County may provide reimbursement of approved tuition and course related textbooks up to a maximum of $850 per fiscal year for all upper division and graduate courses or up to a maximum of $500 for all other courses in accordance with the Current Memorandum of Agreement.

District Attorney Investigators are represented by the Ventura County Deputy Sheriff's Association (VCDSA) and are eligible for overtime compensation.
The eligible list established for this position may be used to fill existing and future regular, temporary, fixed-term, intermittent and extra-help positions within the District Attorney's Office. There is currently one vacancy.

Examples Of Duties
In addition to investigating and preparing a wide variety of criminal and civil cases for trial, typical duties for an investigator include, but are not limited to, the following: locating and interviewing suspects, victims and witnesses; collecting, evaluating, and analyzing various forms of evidence including statements and depositions; determining if scientific or expert witness testimony is required prior to trial; assembling and evaluating evidence to be used at trial; preparing and executing search warrants and warrants of arrest; conducting surveillance activities including the use of technical investigative equipment; serve subpoenas; transporting and providing protective service to prosecution witnesses; coordinating and conducting physical and photographic line-ups for identification purposes; preparing diagrams and charts for court presentation; testifying in court; preparing written and verbal reports containing facts and findings of investigations; conducting financial and character background investigations; coordinating with deputy district attorneys on matters related to pretrial preparations; coordinating investigative activities with other law enforcement agencies; and performing other related investigative functions. Responsibilities and duties may change and/or increase as the investigator gains additional experience and expertise.
Working Conditions: An appointee is a “Peace Officer” as defined in Section 830.1 of the California Penal Code and, as such, will be required to carry a firearm, holster, OC spray and handcuffs, and may be required to work varying, extended or weekend hours as investigative duties and work assignments dictate.

Thorough knowledge of the modern techniques and practices of criminal investigation; the substantive and procedural California criminal law; use and care of firearms; the laws of arrest, search and seizure; rules of evidence; admissibility of confessions and witnesses’ statements; functions and extent of authority of the District Attorney’s Office; the resources and techniques available in public and private criminal laboratories; and the latest medical-legal techniques in criminal investigation; warrant and subpoena service; and allied law enforcement agencies. Thorough abilities to gather, analyze, correlate and evaluate observed facts and evidence; interrogate witnesses and suspects effectively; accurately prepare investigative reports; read and comprehend legal material; communicate effectively orally and in writing; work effectively with various levels of government, law enforcement agencies, judicial groups and individuals.
Supplemental Information
May be required to work on call and be available evenings, weekends and nights. May be exposed to hostile witnesses and hazardous or stressful situations during the course of completing assignments.
Education, Training And Experience
Considerable experience in criminal investigation which has led to the acquisition of the required knowledge, skills and abilities. The required knowledge, skills and abilities also can be obtained by completion of a Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or a related field; formal training in the California Rules of Evidence and in evidence accumulation and presentation at trial and at least two years of criminal investigation experience in a government law enforcement agency. Additional experience may be substituted for the college requirement on a year-for-year basis, up to a maximum of four years.
Special Requirements
Must possess a valid and current California driver license at the time of appointment which must be maintained throughout employment in this classification. Must possess or be eligible to possess a current California POST Basic Certificate as described in the regulations of the Commission on Peace Officer’s Standards and Training. Must be at least twenty-one years of age.

PHYSICAL/PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAMINATIONS: In accordance with Government Code Section 1031, candidates who receive a conditional job offer will have their physical, emotional, and mental health evaluated and must be free from any condition which might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer or performance of the duties of this position.
Candidates successfully completing the examination process may be placed on an eligible list for a period of one (1) year.
