College and Career Counselor
POSITION TITLE: College and Career Counselor
BUILDING LOCATION: Solomon High School
PAYMENT RATE: $43,000-up depending upon qualifications
WORKING HOURS: 40 hrs.; Full time; 204 day contract
BENEFITS ELIGIBLE: Yes: KPERS, 100% single paid BC/BS Health, vacation/sick leave, 403b match

EVALUATED BY: High School Principal and/or Superintendent of Schools
PURPOSE: The College and Career Counselor will support students in developing and achieving their post-secondary goals through individual plans of study, career exploration opportunities, and preparation for life beyond high school. This position will play a key role in delivering the Senior 101 class, fostering community partnerships, and connecting students with scholarship opportunities. The counselor will collaborate with staff, parents, and community stakeholders to ensure every student has a clear pathway for success after graduation.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Masters degree in School Counseling, Career Counseling, or a related field.
Valid state certification/licensure in school counseling.
Experience in college and career counseling at the secondary level preferred.
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Proficiency in using career and college readiness platforms and tools.
Demonstrated ability to build partnerships with community stakeholders.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Individual Plans of Study:
Guide students in creating and maintaining personalized Individual Plans of Study (IPS) that align with their career and educational aspirations.
Regularly review and update IPS documents to reflect students evolving interests, goals, and achievements.
Provide ongoing academic and career counseling to ensure alignment with graduation requirements and post-secondary plans.
Update KSDE Certification lists of all graduates for Post-Secondary Success
Senior 101 Class Instruction:
Develop and teach the Senior 101 curriculum, focusing on essential life skills, college readiness, career preparation, and financial literacy.
Coordinate guest speakers, workshops, and resources to enhance the Senior 101 experience.
Provide guidance on topics such as resume building, interview skills, job applications, and transition planning.
Complete the Market Value Asset spreadsheet for all students during their high school career.
Career Exploration and Community Partnerships:
Organize career exploration activities, including job shadowing, internships, and field trips to businesses, colleges, and technical schools.
Build and maintain strong partnerships with local businesses, community organizations, and higher education institutions.
Serve as a liaison between the school and community partners to create meaningful opportunities for students.
Organize, plan, adjust Opportunity Night for our families and partners.
Coordinate and lead the partnership with Salina Area Technical College for duel credit and vocational certification programs
Coordinate and organize all CTE Pathways and paperwork for KSDE.
Scholarship and Financial Aid Guidance:
Identify and communicate scholarship opportunities to students and families.
Assist students with scholarship applications, essays, and submission processes.
Provide workshops and individual support for completing FAFSA and other financial aid applications.
Collaboration and Advocacy:
Work closely with teachers, administrators, and parents to support students academic and career goals.
Advocate for the needs and aspirations of students to ensure equitable access to resources and opportunities.
Monitor student progress and provide interventions as needed to help students stay on track for graduation and post-secondary success.
Help create and update course codes, classes, and opportunities with the high school principal.
Professional Development:
Stay current with trends and best practices in college and career counseling.
Attend relevant workshops, conferences, and training sessions.
Share knowledge and resources with staff and colleagues to promote a college and career-ready culture.

PERFORMANCE EVALUATION:

Solomon USD #393 is located midway between Abilene and Salina on Interstate 70. Our district schools are all in one location. The high school was newly built in 1996 and is currently ranked as a 2A school. Current enrollment, Pre-K through 12th grade is approximately 408 students. We have just opened a NEW PK-4th grade school in the fall of 2023.
Solomon features both all-day kindergartens, all-day 4-year-old preschool classes, starting in the fall of 2023, and an Early Learning Center for 6 weeks to school-age children all on our campus. ALL programs meet 5 days a week. Solomon offers after-school programs for students Pre K-4th grade also. The district hosts Salina Area Technical College classes on campus and provides transportation to their campus for additional courses. Students can earn up to 30 college class for FREE with community service projects and civic engagement opening up those wonderful opportunities. Class sizes average 30 students per grade. Solomon schools are a very friendly environment and have strong and active community support.
