Job Description The City of Avondale has an opportunity for a Community Service Officer within the Avondale Police Department. This is a non-sworn position.
Performs a variety of tasks in direct support of law enforcement activities. Responds to Police dispatch-based calls for service, conducts investigations, and writes reports for calls not requiring Police Officer presence, including minor motor vehicle collisions, parking violations, and minor criminal incidents. As necessary, works with Police Officers and City employees investigating various crimes, directing traffic, and assisting with other police department activities. Responsible for generating self-initiated activities such as locating abandoned vehicles, parking violations, and assisting stranded motorists. Essential Functions • Patrols areas of the City to enforce parking violations or abandoned vehicles.
• Investigates and reports on minor criminal violations with no suspect information or are delayed in reporting.
• Responds to assist on-duty officers in directing traffic at accident scenes and special events.
• Helps secure the scene of a crime.
• Works with City and department personnel at community events.
• Responds to and assist stranded motorists within the City.
• Provides equipment and resources to on-duty officers as requested by supervisors.
• Assists with duties of an Animal Control Officer or Park Ranger, as needed.
• Assists the public by giving directions and responding to general questions.
• Provide security assistance in patrolling exterior city parking lots, as required.
• Responds to and conducts minor traffic collision investigations.
• May be tasked with photo radar review or other traffic-related duties.
Minimum Qualifications High School diploma or GED equivalency is required.
One (1) year of experience in a public safety or law enforcement setting or similar type position.
Valid Arizona Operator’s Driver’s License.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must complete and pass a training program conducted by the Avondale Police Department prior to the end of the twelve (12) month probationary period. May be required to wear a ballistic vest. May be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays. Ability to handle interactions with hostile or irate individuals, identify unsafe or hazardous conditions and behaviors, and maintain a professional working relationship with City employees and visitors.
Must be able to pass a comprehensive background investigation, polygraph, psychological exam, and fingerprinting.
Supplemental Information Work requires the ability to read and interpret training materials, police reports, medical records, insurance claims, victim impact statements, City codes, statutes, and general correspondence.
Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Work requires the ability to write reports, letters, petitions, victim impact statements, and general correspondence.
Work requires the occasional direction of helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, volunteers, or temporary employees.
Work requires analysis and judgment in accomplishing diversified duties. Work requires the exercise of independent thinking within the limits of policies, standards, and precedents.
The incumbent in this position has contact with others within the organization. These contacts may involve similar work units or departments within the City such as Police and Courts which may be involved in decision-making or providing approval or decision-making authority for purchases or projects. In addition, the incumbent works with individuals outside the City who may belong to professional or peer organizations and various state and federal agencies. Vendors and suppliers may also be called upon for information on purchases, supplies, or products.
