Safety Specialist - Athens, GA (CAT)
Job Description
The Safety Specialist oversees, monitors, and evaluates the safety and environmental conditions of the workplace to ensure the health and safety of employees. This position focuses on compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations to ensure the organization is compliant with all safety-related requirements. This position will oversee training programs and maintain PM Quality Assurance Programs.
The ideal candidate has an Associate’s degree or equivalent experience and 5-10 years of safety experience working in an industrial setting, OSHA 30-hour general industry certification, familiarity with all relevant safety rules and regulations (local, state, and federal) and OSHA requirements, strong written/verbal communication and computer skills, and good problem solving skills. Candidates must be able to pass a background check, drug screen, and pre-employment test. OSHA 501 or 511 certification with experience handling CFR 49, Federal Motor Carrier is a plus. Candidates must have broad knowledge of safety and health programs as they relate to an industrial work environment (i.e., VPP, ISO 18001, ISO 14001, and RCRA).
Responsibilities
• Oversee EHS training initiatives for the site including, Train the Trainer Programs, OSHA Training, Environmental Protection Training and New Hire Safety Orientation
• Manage the site safety programs, processes and initiatives; Educate personnel in safety practices and procedures and good housekeeping practices
• Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local health, industrial hygiene and safety regulations
• Accompany visiting inspectors and report findings
• Perform daily job walk-throughs and safe operating procedures for all tasks and when investigating incidents
• Perform audits to review and ensure compliance with applicable health and safety standards, i.e. VPP
• Responsible for EHS reporting i.e., near misses, observations, I&I rate and other metrics; Support continuous improvement initiatives and ensure customer quality standards are met
• Ensure all safety procedures, practices, and regulations are followed before, during, and after the process to foster a positive safety culture by having a safety-first mindset and approach during execution of activities
• Ensures new equipment has proper LOTO procedures and signage
• Responsible for maintaining a 5S program; certification or training in Lean 5S
• Maintain training program and skills matrix for all employees
• Maintain Quality Assurance Program for proper completion of work orders
• Coordinate with onsite EH&S to ensure site procedures are followed
• Perform outside contractor orientation to ensure proper safety compliance
• Performs other special projects and duties as assigned
Qualifications
• Associate degree or equivalent experience and 5-10 years of safety experience working in an industrial setting
• OSHA 30-hour General Industry certification
• Familiarity with local, state, and federal safety rules, regulations, and OSHA requirements to include CFR 49, Federal Motor Carrier
• Experience and knowledge in safety and health programs as they relate to an industrial work environment i.e., VPP, ISO, 18001, ISO 14001 and RCRA
• Experience in a heavy manufacturing facility in a Safety Management role
• Experience demonstrating successful support of a positive safety culture
• Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation(s)
