The supervisor is also responsible for assisting in the administrative and clinical direction of the unit and coordinating nursing department functions/activities as needed.Minimum Required Qualifications:            Education:     Graduated from an accredited School of Nursing.                                    BSN preferred.Experience:  Three years experience in Surgical Services area.                        Demonstration of managerial/leadership skills.Licensure, Registration, or Certification:                         Current licensure in good standing with South Carolina Board of Nurse                                  Examiners.                        BCLS, ACLS required. Certification preferred.Proficiency Requirements: Passing grade on Connect Care Essentials I and II for RN, eMAR for RNs (RX210), and OpTime Advanced class for specific Surgical Services area.Position Responsibilities:Essential Functions:Assists Director in planning and supervision of unit goals and objectives; assists with implementation of procedures and policies. Develops and maintains quality patient care in collaboration with other departments and the medical staff.a.   Maintains a visible positive presence in the delivery of patient services.b.   Assists with systematic process for admissions, assessments, treatments, and discharge planning.c.   Assists with continuous quality improvement that facilitates quality care.d.   Assists attending physicians with processes related to direct patient care.3.   Directs patient care priorities and adjusts appropriate staffing levels to cost effectively      meet the needs of the patients.      4.   Assists the Director in planning and maintaining the department’s readiness for regulatory surveyors.      5.   Provides leadership and direct supervision of the staff members by:            a.   Assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating conditions and needs of patients and determining that quality care has been rendered.            b.   Assisting with orientation and training of new staff to ensure their integration into the interdisciplinary treatment team.            c.   Supervising and directing unit clinical staff by providing positive clear direction, communication, and assistance.            d.   Identifying staff development opportunities for clinical staff, as requested by the department Director.            e.   Maintaining flexibility to adapt to patient census/acuity changes, and coverage of unit 24/7.            f.    Preparing and maintaining staffing schedules.            g.   Providing written and/or verbal feedback to the Director and staff on employee performance and disciplinary issues. Works with HR and Director to complete any disciplinary action, including termination.            h.   Completing annual performance evaluations.            i.    Acting as a role model for department staff in appearance and behavior.      6.   Maintains a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients/families. Promotes patient and family advocacy within the unit.      7.   Manages resources in a cost effective manner.      8.   Ensures accurate maintenance of patient’s medical records and ensures that patient records are treated as confidential information within HIPAA guidelines.      9.   Maintains required unit reports, records, and statistics.      10. Responds to all emergency situations on the unit and participates as appropriate.      11. Attends meetings as required and participates on committees as directed.      12. Keeps Director informed of unit and departmental issues/situations. Participates in active problem solving with Medical Staff, Director, and hospital staff. Promotes cooperation and maintains effective working relationships with physicians and other departments.      13. Adheres to BSHSI rules, regulations, and policies.      14. Assists Director with chart audits as directed.      15. Assists Director with staffing.      16. Maintains cooperative and business-like relationships.      17. Maintains a pleasant and professional demeanor at all times.Other Functions:      1.   All nursing functions required by Level I, II, and III RNs.      2.   Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.      3.   Performs other related duties as assigned.      4.   Assists and supports other departments when needed.Patient Population Served:  Provides comprehensive care according to patient’s age, stage of growth and development to include infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient populations.Physical Requirements:  Frequent walking/standing while on duty, occasional lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring of patients. Frequent reaching, bending, stooping, sitting. Verbal, auditory and visual skills necessary.Working Conditions:  Regularly exposed to risk of blood borne pathogens, exposed to unpleasant elements (accidents, injury, illness, death).
