Job Responsibilities Performs skilled manual labor and operates heavy equipment, such as a backhoe, in a variety of activities associated with the cleaning, regrading and maintenance of shoulders and ditches in the state rights-of-way. Performs general highway maintenance worker functions and operates medium equipment such as: tandem dump truck to load and haul materials needed for maintenance operations; Operates hand and power tools in the cleaning and maintenance of shoulders and ditches. Sets up traffic control according to MUTCD standards to warn motorists of roadwork ahead. Removes litter, debris, and dead animals from roadway and rights-of-way, and assists Supervisor with on-call for after-hours emergencies as needed. This position requires employee to lift heavy objects. Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, to include operating medium equipment. May include being available for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum and Additional Requirements One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requi r es attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) withi n six (6) months of placement in the position.
The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
