About The College/Unit/Department
The Music Theory and Composition Area (www.noise.uga.edu) at the Hugh Hodgson School of Music is a vibrant creative community that fosters a supportive environment for composers and performers to explore a wide range of musical interests and styles in music, as well as interdisciplinary collaborations outside of music. Composition students also frequently collaborate with student and local filmmakers. The Dancz Center of New Music is the home of the Music Composition area and features a modular black box theater and three electronic music studios that form a robust space for the creation, performance, recording, and dissemination of 21st century music and multimedia artworks. In particular, Electronic Music Studio 1 (Media Studio) is optimized for media scoring and is outfitted with a collection of sample libraries including Vienna Symphonic Library, BBC Symphony Orchestra Pro, and other various Spitfire libraries.

A terminal degree in Film Scoring, Media Scoring, Screen Scoring, Music Composition, Music Technology, Recording Arts, Film and Media Studies, or a related field earned by August 1, 2025.
Position Summary
The Hugh Hodgson School of Music at the University of Georgia (UGA) seeks a dynamic faculty member to contribute to teaching and creative research in film and media scoring, and production. The candidate will oversee the Film and Media Scoring Certificate program and foster collaboration between the Hugh Hodgson School of Music and other campus units, including the MFA program in Film, Television, and Digital Media , The Department of Theatre and Film Studies , and the Music Business Certificate program. The candidate is also expected to develop connections between the university and the growing media music industries in Athens and the state of Georgia, building on UGA’s relationship with Trillith and Athena Studios.
Responsibilities
• Teach a load of five courses per year in film and media scoring and production, or other topics in the candidate’s expertise. Courses may include Media Scoring and Production I & II, Orchestration for Film, Game Composition, Music & Media, Applied Lessons in Film and Media Scoring, or other creative areas at the intersections of music creativity, technology and industry.
• Oversee and manage the Film and Media Scoring Certificate program.
• Maintain an active agenda of research and creative work in the field of film and media scoring and production, and commercial music.
• Work collaboratively with other units within the university to forge creative partnerships involving music for media and commercial music.
• Develop connections between the university and media industries in Athens and the state of Georgia.
• Participate in activities related to the academic mission of the university, including service on committees, student advising, student recruiting, and to the music theory/composition area within the Hugh Hodgson School of Music.
• Other duties as assigned.
Additional Requirements
Candidates with a non-terminal master’s degree must document exceptional accomplishments in their respective field and must be approved for a terminal degree exception before hire.
Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, And/or Certification
Three or more years of professional experience in the commercial music industry in areas such as film and media scoring, orchestration, production, recording, music publishing, or a related field. Minimum one year of experience with teaching and mentoring students at the collegiate level.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And/or Competencies
A desire to contribute to a dynamic, holistic music program in a city known for its music and arts culture.
