Primary responsibilities include genetic engineering and genome modification of bacteria for characterization using animal models and cell culture to identify lead candidates for pre-clinical/clinical assessments. The individual will also be responsible for mentoring graduate and undergraduate students, as well as personnel from other labs in the Center for Neurodegenerative Disease Research, as well as to present their research in routine lab group meeting and at scientific conferences.

The individual hired to fill this position will be part of a multidisciplinary team to research neurodegenerative diseases with an emphasis on the role of the gut microbiome in modifying disease processes. The individual will also be involved in development of new live biological therapies and structural and functional characterization of the gut microbiome. Primary responsibilities include genetic engineering and genome modification of bacteria for characterization using animal models and cell culture to identify lead candidates for pre-clinical/clinical assessments. The individual will also be responsible for mentoring graduate and undergraduate students, as well as personnel from other labs in the Center for Neurodegenerative Disease Research, as well as to present their research in routine lab group meeting and at scientific conferences.
Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification In Position
Ph.D. in life science topics, including microbiology, biochemistry or molecular biology.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And/or Competencies
Skills needed include the ability to communicate effectively with others, follow oral and written instructions, collect and record data and to organize and prioritize multiple tasks and to effectively write and edit text for manuscripts and reports. Experience in fundamental methods of molecular biology and recombinant DNA is also needed, including familiarity with growth, maintenance and genetic manipulation and molecular characterization of bacteria. Experience working with microorganism under BSL-2 conditions and use of computational tools for microbiome characterization is preferred. Familiarization in drug development and manufacturing process for live biological therapeutics would be beneficial.
Physical Demands
Exert light-moderate force in excess of sedentary work through lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling to move objects. The ability to distinguish color is also preferred.
