Duties/Responsibilities
Duties/Responsibilities
Development and application of methods for structural characterization of plant cell wall carbohydrates. This involves understanding of analytical techniques for carbohydrate chemistry and plant cell wall composition and structure.
Percentage of time 25 Duties/Responsibilities
Study hemicellulose structure after deconstruction by C. thermocellum with and without coculture partners after fermentation of plant biomass. This task involves knowledge of different analytical techniques and requires troubleshooting of new protocols, evaluating effectiveness and modifying based on analyses. This task does not involve fermentation.
Percentage of time 25 Duties/Responsibilities
Development of and perform activity assays of enzymes that modify and/or deconstruct plant carbohydrates. This task involves the design of experiments, preparation of substrates and enzymes for assays, and interpretation of results.

Oversee and train lab members and mentor undergraduate students in research techniques. Preparation presentations and for and attendance and participation in scientific conferences, bi-monthly project/ team meetings, lab meetings and one-on-one meetings. These responsibilities involve critical thinking and knowledge of the literature in the field.

The Postdoc responsibilities will include application of a combination of analytic techniques to determine composition and structure of carbohydrates during microbial fermentation. The research will involve the identification and characterization of enzymes that act to hydrolyze or modify plant carbohydrates. This work involves the application of several analytical techniques including gas and liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy. The Postdoc will develop techniques to enrich, analyze and deconstruct plant carbohydrates, interpret the results and prepare progress reports. The position also involves oversight and training of undergraduate students in routine research techniques, giving scientific presentations in internal and external meetings, and assisting in the preparation of manuscripts for scientific journals.
Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification In Position
PhD in chemistry, biochemistry or related fields. Candidates with experience in biochemical characterization of carbohydrate active enzymes (GHs) are especially encouraged to apply.
