We are seeking a news reporter who will make strategic decisions about coverage, break exclusive news, cultivate deep sourcing and provide important journalism.
The job requires someone who is well-organized, motivated and can work independently while exercising solid judgment.
While you will have some work-from-home flexibility, you will regularly meet face-to-face with sources and community members. Among the topics to cover will include development, trending/breaking news and dining.
About Salina
Salina (population 47,000) is a major community in Kansas and center for health, education and business. It has a booming downtown, a vibrant arts community and hosts annual music and arts festivals.
Responsibilities
• Tells stories that accurately inform, engage and enlighten our audience.
• Provides thoughtful analysis and produces watchdog journalism.
• Writes clear, fast and accurately in turning coverage of meetings/proceedings into readable storytelling, including stories in alternate format, such as Q&A, What to Know, timelines, etc.
• Works with editor and analytics to evaluate what's working and what's not and develop ongoing plans to better satisfy audience needs.
• Contribute to the community’s greater good through impactful journalism.
Requirements
• Bachelor's or master’s degree in journalism or any other subject or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 1-3 years of daily newsroom experience.
• High-level writing, communication and time management skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work well on deadline.
• This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
