Optical/Dental Outreach Assistant General Description
The Optical / Dental Outreach Assistant responsibilities include a wide range of duties assisting in our eye care and dental departments. In the eye care department, the Optical Assistant will use optical equipment to perform the initial testing needed to prepare a patient for an exam with an optometrist. In the dental department, the Dental Outreach Assistant will assist in all outreach activities, including assisting with school-based outreach, paperwork, and billing.

Optical/Dental Outreach Assistant Essential Duties
• Greets all patients and visitors in a professional, prompt, courteous and helpful manner.
• Attentive to patient and provider needs, actively participate in keeping providers on schedule.
• Work collaboratively with the clinical team to promote continuity of patient care.
• Prepares exam room and rooms patient.
• Assist providers and/or team in daily operational activities.
• Ensures examination rooms are fully stocked, cleaned, organized, etc.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Optical Assistant Specific Essential Duties
• Checks patients in & out for appointments.
• Inputs patient insurance information; updates/changes as necessary. Complete Good Faith Estimates.
• Understands insurance and be able to accurately communicate with patients regarding their vision coverage.
• Is alert for credit problems and verifies financial class status on patients
• Takes acuities and completes other preliminary exam testing.
• Troubleshoots and helps with customer optical concerns relating to frames, lenses & measurements.
• Instructs patients on contact lens insertion, removal, care techniques, and replacement schedules.
• Cleans all examination equipment.
Dental Outreach Assistant Specific Essential Duties
• Perform duties associated with outreach services.
• Assist with driving to outreach locations in company vehicle; with a willingness to drive during inclement weather, i.e. rain, snow, wind, etc. If the company vehicle is not available, may have to drive own vehicle to outreach locations; will get reimbursed for mileage.
• Assist ECP hygienist at facility, as needed.
• Provide and may submit reports online related to outreach locations, numbers served, etc.
• Assist with any dental outreach paperwork and billing processes.
• Organize and lay out instruments for hygienists to use;
• Hand instruments and other materials to hygienist during procedures;
• Make patients feel comfortable before, during and after treatment;
• Chart according to protocol;
Optical/Dental Outreach Assistant Skills Required
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, patients, and the public.
• Knowledge of HIPAA privacy rules and regulations.
• Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks, work under pressure, and to prioritize tasks to provide appropriate, efficient and quality patient care.
• Effective and efficient time management.
• Ability to work independently and use good judgement.
Optical/Dental Outreach Assistant Education and Experience
• High school diploma;
• 1 year experience in a Dental or Optical environment (not required but is beneficial);
• Computer and typing skills;
• Knowledge of patient education principals;
• Must have and maintain CPR certification;
• Social and cultural sensitivity appropriate to ethnically and economically diverse patient and employee-base.
