Position Summary Performs assessment, analysis, consultation and possible enforcement services for licensed establishments to identify, avoid, and resolve conditions related to food, drinking water, indoor air, housing and recreational environments that place individuals and the community at an increased health risk. Coordinates with local licensed establishments to maintain licensure. Provides accurate and timely reports to the Public Health Director and the Minnesota Department of Health. Administers and enforces local ordinances; performs high risk assessments and health risk education.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities • Schedules and/or performs a variety of mandated inspections, evaluations, and permit review activities which, depending on area of assignment, may include food, beverage, and lodging establishments; pools; recreational camping areas, youth camps; and manufactured home parks. Performs plan reviews for new and existing establishments. Coordinates enforcement actions.
• Responds to complaints and conducts related investigations which may include food-borne and water-borne illness outbreaks, utilizing appropriate investigative techniques and coordinating activities with other internal departments and/or external agencies; enforces codes by preparing and issuing notices of violation and recommending corrective actions.
• Performs a variety of administrative and educational outreach activities which, depending on area of assignment, may include educating food handlers on applicable policies and procedures, serving as a consultant to staff in matters pertaining to permitting establishments or evaluating existing equipment for rule compliance. Reviews and approves applications for licensing and special events. Determines and assigns license category, risk level, and license fees for all program areas.
• Collects and interprets environmental data.
• Prepares a variety of inspection documents that assess and summarize inspection and investigative findings, including violations.
• Timely documentation of daily activities, time and expenses in appropriate documentation system, including annual required trainings.
• Other duties as assigned or apparent.
• Regular attendance is required.
• Attends meetings and training, as needed.
Qualifications Education :
• Bachelor’s degree in biological or physical sciences or related field and 1 year of experience;
OR
• Equivalent combination of education/training/experience.
Requirements: • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to drive in the state of Minnesota.
• Must possess the Minnesota Registered Sanitarian (RS) credential.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities • Knowledge of the Minnesota Food Code and FDA Food Program Standards.
• Knowledge of governmental operations and departments.
• The ability to read and understand commercial blueprints.
• General knowledge of plumbing, mechanical and fire codes.
• The ability to perform work requiring a high degree of concentration and judgment in interpreting practices and procedures to solve problems.
• The ability to work independently and to prioritize work requests.
• Knowledge of and ability to operate standard office software sufficient to manipulate data, draft reports and maintain records.
• Verbal and written communication skills sufficient to effectively present information and respond to questions from a wide variety of audiences, persuade stakeholders, and to perform public speaking to the community and other groups, and reading comprehension skills sufficient to read, understand and interpret complex and varied work-related materials.

Position is a grade 9 with an entry hourly wage range of $29.54 to $33.12, DOQ.
