Gallery Guides are integral members of the Security and Facilities Department, cultivating a welcoming, inclusive, and comfortable environment for all museum guests. This role is the initial point of contact for visitors, offering information about the museum and its exhibitions. The position is vital to the seamless daily operations of the visitor experience team. Gallery Guides collaborate closely with the security team to safeguard the museum, its staff, and visitors from fire, theft, and accidents. This hourly position requires availability for weekend, evening, and holiday shifts. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Visitor Experience Warmly welcome, greet, orient, and direct visitors at the welcome desk or in galleries as assigned. Facilitate spontaneous discussions about art with minimal information. Assist visitors with inquiries about artists and exhibitions through engaging discussions. Be knowledgeable about and able to discuss the museum’s physical layout and architectural features, including galleries, restrooms, Sculpture Garden, exits, and elevator. Promote museum events, including programs, tours, and special events. Review the daily schedule of events and communicate relevant information to other staff and museum guest as needed. Record visitor information and attendance in a database system. Be familiar with Friends of GMOA benefits promote Friend benefits to museum guest. Be receptive to visitor feedback and perspectives. Continuously evaluate surroundings for safety while creating an engaging experience for visitors. Maintain the area around visitor welcome desks and galleries, including tidying lobby and gallery areas, refilling brochure racks, and notifying maintenance as needed. Attend ongoing training and professional development opportunities. Answer and direct phone calls and answer general questions about the museum, exhibitions, and public offerings. Museum Protection Observe visitors in the gallery and take proactive actions to prevent potential damage to artwork. Implement artwork protection strategies. Politely remind visitors of security concerns (no touching, no food or drinks, no large bags, etc.). Direct visitors to place large bags and other inappropriate items in lockers or the coatroom. Inspect art objects, labels, and lights/furnishings for signs of change or damage. Report damage or changes in condition of objects immediately to security staff. Alert security staff as needed to ensure a safe environment for artwork and visitors. Assist in disaster and emergency situations with evacuation and crowd control. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications High school diploma or GED with at least two years of customer service experience, preferably in a restaurant or retail settings. Experience interacting with guests in educational, museum, gallery, or similar settings is desirable. Open to diverse viewpoints. Passionate about engaging with the public. Patient and adept at understanding others. Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply, though it is not required. Excellent verbal communication skills with the ability to be both friendly and authoritative. Ability to communicate effectively with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds. Skilled in employing customer service tactics in challenging situations to ensure a positive visitor experience. Experienced in remaining calm in stressful situations, resolving complaints with tact and courtesy, and de-escalating complex situations. Capable of quickly assessing and communicating complex situations to senior staff. Proficient in operating a database system, radio, and telephone. Knowledgeable in standard computer applications and programs, e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook email. Able to work positively with colleagues, artists, the public, donors, and volunteers. Ability to represent the museum with a high level of integrity and professionalism, adhere to museum policies, and support management decisions in a positive, professional manner. Dependable, flexible, and adaptable in a dynamic, event-driven environment. Able to anticipate, intervene, and prevent potentially harmful circumstances to artwork. Able to read, understand, and follow standard operating procedures and work assignments. Attention to detail and the ability to stay alert for long periods in a quiet environment. Ability to work day and evening shifts and on holidays. Physical Demands Must be able to stand for extended periods. Ability to move stanchions and wheelchairs; capable of lifting up to 25 pounds.
