Job Description – Carman I. Description of Position Fundamentals of this position consist of the maintenance and repair of railcars within a facility, and the performance of all required brake tests on departing trains. II. Qualifications Standards Individual must have the ability to maintain a focus on safety while working on and around heavy equipment. Must be mechanically inclined and pass all required background checks and drug/alcohol screenings. III. Organizational Relationships Mechanics will report directly to supervisor/facility manager/regional manager, general manager and /or CMO. IV. Job Requirements / Responsibilities Wear required uniform (coveralls), head protection, proper shoes, safety glasses, and other safety items as instructed. Able to climb ladders on rail cars to a height of 16 feet. Be able to gain entry to rail cars by means of the rail car ladder. Must be able to communicate (read, speak and write) in English to meet FRA requirements. Certified to use SMAW welding equipment or the ability to train to qualify as a certified welder. Must demonstrate, after proper training, the ability to repair railcars in compliance with AAR and FRA standards. Must demonstrate, after proper training, the ability to operate forklifts, railcar jacks, and other tools and equipment necessary for the completion of assigned tasks. Able to lift 50 lbs. on a regular basis. Open and close end doors of rail cars. Physically able to work on your knees while performing mechanic services. Able to work in close quarters while in rail cars. Safely drive a vehicle on customer’s property. Work in all kinds of weather conditions. Heat, Cold, Ice, Snow, etc. Available to work any day of the week, including Saturday, Sunday and Holidays as needed. Available to work irregular hours as needed. (Day, Nights) Be at least 18 years of age. Have a valid driver’s license in accordance with insurance company’s requirements.
