Packaging Development Engineer
Swedish Match North America LLC, develops, manufactures, and sells quality products with market leading brands such as ZYN nicotine pouches and other smokeless tobacco products. In order to continually promote and create innovative products that support our vision we are currently seeking a Packaging Development Engineer .
Major Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
• Design and test packaging prototypes to evaluate their performance.
• Conduct research on materials and packaging solutions, analyzing their properties and suitability.
• Conduct packaging performance testing to ensure durability during processing, transportation, and storage.
• Collaborate with global packaging teams to ensure packaging assortment consistencies and synergies.
• Collaborate with suppliers to develop new packaging opportunities or to resolve packaging related issues.
• Create packaging specifications and testing protocols.
• Lead cross functional teams to resolve issues or create packaging solutions.
• Source and evaluate packaging materials and suppliers.
• Ensure that packaging materials are environmentally sustainable and comply with company goals.
• Utilize scientific, mathematical, and engineering principles to solve problems and improve processes.
• Prioritize and perform research on technical problems with minimal guidance.
• Plan, implement, and document experiments and physical analysis assignments.
• Analyze empirical data to determine trends and develop solutions.
• Provide technical assistance to staff, contractors, vendors, government officials in the application and interpretation of standards related to packaging.
• Keep abreast of production packaging issues and process trends. Identify opportunities for improvement of established processes.
• Maintain broad knowledge of packaging disciplines.
• Identify, research, and resolve system malfunctions and operational problems.
• Take responsibility for tasks and prioritize activities.
• Ensure compliance with FDA, OSHA, and GMP regulations to include health, safety, and welfare as appropriate.
• Maintain packaging related documentation and records.
• Manage packaging projects and timelines.
• Develop and document physical testing protocols for new and existing packaging.
• Define and validate specifications for packaging materials and packaging designs.
• Review regulatory compliance of packing materials.
• Rationalize raw materials to minimize SKU’s and processing need.
• Assure the smooth transition into manufacturing
EDUCATION : Degree in Packaging Engineering or related field, Master’s degree preferred.
EXPERIENCE : Minimum 5 years working in a packaging related discipline or equivalent competency.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE:
- Strong knowledge of materials science, including plastics, metals, paper board, non-wovens
- Strong knowledge of injection molding, labeling materials, primary and secondary packaging
- Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes and ISO, ASTM, and ISTA testing procedures
- Understanding of environmental regulations related to packaging materials
- Familiarity with packaging design software and tools
- Knowledge of packaging and raw material testing tools including tensile strength, MVTR, air permeability, wicking, particle size distribution, viscosity, optical comparator
- Excellent project management and communication skills
- Software: Word, Excel, PowerBI, PowerPoint, PLM, LIMS
- Skilled in problem solving
- Project Management
- Design of Experiment (DOE)
- Statistical analysis
Desirable knowledge:
- Intellectual Properties/Patent knowledge
- Software: ERP system experience, Minitab
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
• Must be able to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
• Must be able to occasionally ascend / descend stairs or a ladder.
• Must be able to tolerate exposure to manufacturing environment related to tobacco related products.
