Transformer Design and Applications Engineer
Brief Description
The Transformer Design and Applications Engineer assist products and projects through product development cycle. They will work with customers, vendors, manufacturing production and other parties to provide technical support and develop products that exceed the needs of all parties involved.
• Assist in the definition of project scope and objectives, involving all relevant stakeholders and ensuring technical feasibility.
• Coordinate internal resources and third parties/vendors for the execution of projects.
• Develop a detailed project plan and monitor/track progress.
• Mentor, review and approve the designs, calculations and reports prepared by other technical staff through our peer review process.
• Support field service teams as necessary by providing technical knowledge of Electrical Equipment.
• Identify relevant industry and safety standards to products and systems.
• Creates and maintains models, drawings, bill of materials (BOM), and specifications for production.
• Creates procedural standards, operation instructions, and manuals.
• Creates multiple concepts to solve customer issues/concerns.
• Aggregate and prioritize others with regards to analysis support and personal knowledge for development of product line features and design improvements.
• Provides information for technical publications.
• Collaborate with production and product support in resolving quality and/or functional issues.
• Calculate cost and determine feasibility of projects based on analysis of collected data, applying knowledge and techniques of engineering, and advanced mathematics.
• Lead concept design reviews or other team meetings.
• Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies.
• Maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations.
• Lead team to perform detailed RCA inspections of Electrical Equipment and provide conclusions and recommendations.
Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Mechanical, Electrical, Engineering Technology or a General Engineering Degree.
• 5 years of Engineering, or other related experience generally required.
• Safety first attitude with a thorough understanding of risk between people and machinery.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly communicate detailed information to co-workers, management, vendors, suppliers, and customers.
• Excellent customer service skills with the ability to interact in a positive and professional manner to develop and maintain strong working relationships with co-workers, management, vendors, suppliers, and customers.
• Ability to write routine reports and business correspondence.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
• Ability to manage time effectively and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Knowledge of Transformer Design for Distribution and Power Transformers to include Electrical Design, Manufacturing, and Quality Testing.
• Power transformer design experience up to 350 KV BIL including continuous disk and helical circular core and coil construction.
• Distribution transformer design experience up to 200 KV BIL including aluminum/copper wire and foil designs for rectangular core and coil construction.
• Knowledge of Electrical Testing of Distribution and Power Transformers to include Dissolved Gas Analysis, Acceptance Testing, and ability to troubleshoot testing issues.
• Ability to evaluate specifications for distribution and power transformers.
• Knowledge industry OEM’s manufacturing standards, core type, and coils construction.
• Working knowledge of distribution pad mount transformer components, fusing coordination, construction, clearances, and enclosure construction.
• Working knowledge of Power Transformer construction, components, core types, coil construction.
• Working knowledge of transformer phasing, paralleling, impedance matching, banking, connections, and vectors.
• Working knowledge of distribution and power transformer design and applications for renewables and industrial applications requiring K-ratings, electrostatic shielding, rectifier, inverter, furnace, and large motor inrush applications.
• Working knowledge of transformer fluids including natural esters, silicone, and mineral oil. Understand thermal calculations, cooling requirements, increasing cooling rating with cooling fans, pumps, and chillers.
• Specialty transformer design which includes, series/parallel, 3 and 4 windings, grounding transformers, and neutral ground resisters.
• Working knowledge of transformer fluid processing, drying, filtering, hot oil filling, vacuum processing, and oil processing equipment operation.
• Working knowledge and operation of transformer test equipment including turn ratio, winding resistance, insulation resistance, power factor, losses testing, and dielectric stress testing.
• Ability to troubleshoot transformer issues related to connections, installation, application, and failure modes.
• Working knowledge of single phase distribution transformers connections, three phase banking, impedance requirements, and troubleshooting connection issues.
• Ability to operate computer and computer software, including Microsoft Office products, SolidWorks, and MRP.
• Ability to install, test and evaluate components, systems, and prototypes.
• Available for travel to jobsites (variable, but less than 20% on average) for testing and validation of equipment.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.
