The School of Education and Human Development is seeking students to join our research team in the Design Lab. We are developing Roversa, a low-cost, adaptable, and multilingual educational robotics platform for K-12 education. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with research team members from UVA in Charlottesville, Universidad del Norte in Colombia, and UVA-WISE in Wise, Virginia. The ideal candidate should have: ● Excellent communication and documentation skills. ● Work effectively and enthusiastically within a team environment. ● Flexible and responsive to “startup” ethos of project. 3x Robot Manufacturers Students will help define and create an efficient manufacturing process for scaling up a low-cost, multilingual educational robot assembly process. This will include testing prototype versions of the robot, assembling and testing the functionality of the robot, developing tests, building out testing documentation, and using curriculum and educational activities as guides to ensure the robots are working. Students may interact and learn skills in soldering, laser cutting, CAD design, and 3D printing. Students may also be testing and helping teachers learn how to use the robot in their classroom to ensure they are working, and teachers are also providing useful feedback on the robot. Experience in the creation of testing tools is not required but preferred. 2x Robot Developers Students will be working with researchers to develop features on a low-cost, multilingual robot using the micro:bit (NRF52) microcontroller and C++ to ensure effective use of sensors and data collection on an educational robot. Students will also be tasked with creating libraries and extensions in platforms to help connect and broaden the network of resources for robots. Students interested in developing small hardware solutions are also encouraged to apply. There are many features in firmware, software tools, data visualization/dashboards, and hardware that are presented so students may have a choice in a range of features to develop within the ecosystem of the project. Students with skills in C++, Python, and/or Javascript/Typescript preferred. Experience working with microcontrollers is preferred. The job includes working with educational robots. Some of the work can be done remotely and some will need to be done on site in the Design Lab - Ridley 300.
