Minimum Qualifications
Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
• Familiarity with the Library of Congress call number system.
• Familiarity with Ex Libris Alma or similar Integrated Library System
• Familiarity with planning and implementing project-based tasks.
• Two years of progressively responsible library experience; OR any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Position Summary
The Google Book and Shelving Specialist position is responsible to the Stacks Manager for overseeing the general operations of the Google Book Digitization Project as well as participating in the organization and densification of the library's collections. Responsibilities include supervising the project's (2-3) student assistants by coordinating the staffing and workflows needed to process materials for shipment to and from the Libraries' digitization partner, and assisting the Stacks Manager with their regular duties. This position is expected to have a familiarity with all aspects of the Google Books Project project and provide a knowledgeable and well-trained student assistant workforce by orienting them to the project and training them in the use of the Library of Congress classification system, the Libraries' system ( GIL ), and the best practices in the retrieval, processing and reshelving of library materials requested for digitizing.
Work is performed in coordination with the Integrated Library Systems Management Unit of the Cataloging Department by identifying and routing materials with catalog maintenance concerns and to prepare pull lists, data files, and packing lists; and the Preservation Unit of the Collections Department to verify the physical condition of materials requested to be shipped for scanning.
The Google Book and Shelving Specialist also collaborates with the Stacks Manager on other stacks maintenance projects as they arise.
Some Travel to and coordination with on-campus branch libraries will be necessary. The position is based at the off-site storage repository.

• Supervisory experience, including the training of personnel for the performance of routine duties and the ability to plan and organize the work of others.

• Directs the project in the department by managing the cycle of retrieval, GIL processing, preparing carts for shipping, assisting with moving carts to the loading dock for pick up and then the reverse - receiving, unloading, processing, reshelving, and general problem solving.

• Participates in regularly scheduled project meetings with the entire Google Books team including Google staff.
