Assistant Director of Transportation - Transportation
Overall Purpose
The job of Assistant Director of Transportation is done for the purpose/s of planning, evaluating, developing, organizing, and supervising the transportation department and staff; providing information and serving as a resource to others; achieving defined objectives of transportation in compliance with established guidelines; and serving as a member of the leadership team.

Essential Functions
• Assesses incidents, complaints and/or accidents for the purpose of reaching and/or recommending a resolution in coordination with the Director.
• Collaborates with internal and external personnel (auditors, public agencies, community members, bus drivers, etc.) for the purpose of implementing and/or maintaining excellence and safety throughout the department.
• Compiles data from a wide variety of sources (investigating complaints, transportation budget/expenditures, payroll, evaluation of driver, etc.) for the purpose of analyzing issues, ensuring compliance with organization policies and procedures, and/or monitoring program components in coordination with the Director.
• Conducts accident investigations (reviews events, prepares and submits accident reports, coordinates with local police department, communicates to district administration, etc.) for the purpose of complying with legal requirements and insurance carrier procedures.
• Directs transportation operations, the maintenance of services and the implementation of new programs and/or processes in coordination with the Director (driver training and rider safety programs, annual recommendations for budget needs and constraints, transportation information system, etc.) for the purpose of providing services within established timeframes and in compliance with related requirements.
• Facilitates a wide variety of meetings (performance reviews, safety meetings, training assessments, general staff meetings, etc.) for the purpose of identifying issues, developing recommendations, supporting other staff, and serving as a District representative.
• Monitors department operations and adherence to safety protocols (road hazards during inclement weather, proper operation of equipment, safety inspections, process improvement plants, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that all vehicles, equipment, and personnel are operating safely and efficiently.
• Participates in meetings, workshops and seminars (safety committee meetings, conferences, staff meetings, PTA and parent meetings, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
• Performs personnel administrative functions (recruiting, interviewing, recommending, training, supervising, evaluating, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining necessary staffing, enhancing productivity of staff, and ensuring necessary department/program outcomes are achieved.
• Prepares a wide variety of materials (maps, transportation budget input, route report, state reporting, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and issues, meeting compliance requirements, providing audit references, and/or providing supporting materials for requested actions.
• Provides job-related training opportunities for a variety of district staff (drivers, bus aides, mechanics, crossing guards, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring their job success and compliance with legal mandates.
• Researches a variety of topics (new bus routes, bus schedules, new equipment/materials, bus policies, etc.) for the purpose of developing new programs/services, ensuring program compliance with established requirements, securing general information and/or responding to requests.
• Responds to a variety of inquiries (bus drivers, parents, department staff, administration, etc.) for the purpose of identifying the relevant issues and recommending or implementing a plan of action that will efficiently resolve the issue.
• Monitors bus activity via two-way radio in the field on a daily basis.
• Monitors bus parking sites over weekends and holidays. Files vandalism reports with security and police department as necessary.

Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in management or related field
Valid Georgia Driver’s License
School transportation knowledge preferred
Minimum of three (3) years’ classroom or education administration preferred
Physical Requirements
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
Generally the job requires 40% sitting, 20% walking, and 40% standing.
