The Wytheville Residency is seeking individuals interested in joining our highway maintenance team. The Wytheville Residency covers the following counties: Wythe, Grayson, Bland. As a maintenance operator, you will: Respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions. Attend work zone training, prepare work zones and perform traffic control. Demonstrate proper work site protection techniques: identify workplace safety hazards, make suggestions for improvement, wear proper personal protection equipment, maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and use equipment properly and safely. Participate as a working team member performing manual labor including, clearing drainage, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, and fulfilling tasks required to complete road maintenance projects. Complete pre-trip inspections, perform preventive maintenance and operate power tools and light to heavy equipment. VDOT is an emergency response agency, and this position is the core of this requirement, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations. Minimum Qualifications Ability to perform heavy manual labor. Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools. Safety shoes required. Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions. Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair. Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures. Additional Considerations Experience in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms and accident clean-up. Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs. Experience in roadway maintenance and construction. Valid CDL with appropriate endorsements.
