Job Description - Toddler Lead Teacher PURPOSE: To assume responsibility for duties involved in the care and education of young children. Provide activities that stimulate and enhance growth in the emotional, physical, and cognitive domains. Provide support to children's parents. Performs other duties not assigned but essential to the operation of the center. Works under direct supervision of Executive Director and Assistant Director. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: (must meet or exceed in one of the following ways) 1. An undergraduate degree in early childhood education/child development. 2. Associate degree in early childhood/child development and 3 months experience in a licensed facility. 3. Child Development Associate Credential (CDA) in infant/toddler care 4. A person with six months' teaching experience or a supervised practicum in licensed childcare centers enrolling infants and toddlers. 5. A licensed LPN or RN with three months' experience in pediatrics, or in licensed childcare centers enrolling infants and toddlers. ESSENTIAL SKILLS: 1. Knowledge and understanding of child development. 2. Characteristics of initiative, adaptability, cooperation, dependability, and a sense of humor. 3. Independence and competence in assigned tasks. 4. Ability to respond appropriately to children's needs. 5. Verbal and written communication skills. 6. Recognition of signs of illness and safety hazards. 7. Pediatric first aid including infant/child CPR. 8. Ability to supervise and be responsible for a group of children on your own. 9. Ability to lift and carry an average infant/toddler age child (approx. 6-40 lbs.). 10. Ability to stoop, crawl, kneel or bend in order to speak to children at the child's eye level, to play with children and to pick up toys and equipment from the floor. PROGRAM: 1. Accept SCCA's mission statement, goals and objectives. 2. Accept the philosophy and teaching techniques of SCCA and works as a team member. To the young child, each member of the staff is as important as any other. There should be no difference in his feelings toward them. 3. Plan and implement lesson plans. a. Realize and plan for the individual needs, levels and abilities of children as demonstrated in lesson plan writing. Lesson plans should be appropriate for the ability and age of the children for which the plan is written. b. Provide classroom learning experiences which will promote the social, intellectual, physical, and emotional areas of learning. c. Turn weekly, detailed lesson plans into the director by noon on the previous Friday. d. Be familiar with and utilize available materials and equipment. e. Reflect an atmosphere for learning through play and experience as demonstrated in the room environment and daily activities conducted. 4. Take personal responsibility for seeing that each job area is covered and inform director of areas needing substitutes. 5. Cooperate with change as demonstrated in ability to incorporate new ideas and procedures in daily routines, activities, and conversations. 6. Children will be closely supervised at all times. This includes naps, meals, outdoor play and bathroom times. Staff may never sleep during naps. 7. Children's rest times will be utilized for supervision, lesson planning, curriculum or staff meetings, workshops or reading current child development literature. 8. Use only positive reinforcement and discipline measures approved by SCCA. All discipline is handled in a consistent manner. 9. Interact daily with children by holding, rocking, talking to, touching, playing with and being available on the child's level. 10. Use wise behavior management effectively in daily classroom activities. 11. Complete written evaluation of each child's progress as requested by director. 12. Supervise teacher assistants and volunteers assigned to assist with daily routines and activities by providing training, keeping them informed and utilizing their skills and time efficiently. PROFESSIONALISM : 1. Serve as an adult role model by demonstrating constructive, positive behavior; acceptable language and grammar; pleasant, encouraging interactions; and a safe, controlled environment. 2. Work cooperatively with staff, parents, and volunteers to ensure a professional, competent childcare program. 3. Work professionally with supervisors, staff, children, and parents as demonstrated in communication skills, flexibility, positive attitude, and lack of conflict. 4. Show a willingness to substitute in needed areas as exemplified by a lack of complaining when requested to substitute. 5. Demonstrate a knowledge and awareness of the functions, goals, policies, and philosophy of SCCA in conversation, attitude, and actions. 6. Serve as a positive model for volunteers, visitors, student teachers and other personnel as documented by observation. 7. Possess a working knowledge of the Kansas licensing regulations as demonstrated in daily compliance with each. 8. Maintain confidentiality of staff, parent, and child information at all times. 8. Use proper, courteous telephone etiquette at all times. 9. Demonstrate a courteous manner in dealing with children, staff, parents and the public and seek opportunities and methods to be positive with these people. 10. Adhere to proper, established communication channels. PARENT COMMUNICATION AND SUPPORT: 1. Communicate daily with parents concerning the physical, emotional, and general wellbeing of the child. 2. Conduct parent conferences upon request from the parent or director. 3. Offer help and support for parents through conversation, action and attitude as noted in interactions with parents. 4. All communication to parents concerning children's illness or conduct must be approved by the director before it is undertaken. 5. Inform parents of class activities through newsletters, notes, personal conversations, etc. SELF DEVELOPMENT: 1. Complete SCCA orientation within seven calendar days of employment. 2. Attend staff and curriculum meetings as requested. 3. Obtain a minimum of sixteen hours of in-service training in childcare areas annually as required by Kansas licensing requirements. 4. Complete health and safety training, including current certification in pediatric first aid and CPR as required by Kansas licensing regulations. 5. May begin process of receiving a Child Development Associate credential upon employment. RESOURCE MANAGEMENT: 1. Ensure that all areas are maintained daily in a clean and orderly manner (includes care of bathrooms, cribs, cots, floors, tables, chairs, dishes). 2. Return supplies to storage area after use in a prompt and orderly fashion. 3. Utilize supplies efficiently. 4. Utilize time during working shift for childcare planning. 5. Report maintenance problems and supply needs to director. 6. Receive director's approval of all shopping lists before purchases are made. HEALTH AND SAFETY: 1. Practice safety inside and outside, on walks, etc. 2. Demonstrate a knowledge of safety and disaster procedures. 3. Report all incidents and unsafe conditions to director. 4. Adhere to infection control policy of Kansas licensing handbook. 5. Adhere to Kansas licensing requirements when planning, organizing and supervising field trips. 6. When an injury is deemed serious enough, an incident report form must be filled out with the parent signing it and given to the director, within 24 hours of the incident. 7. Complete non-prescription and prescription medicine forms as needed. Medicine is to be given by a designated staff member only. 8. Practice proper, daily health habits with children: a. Change children's clothes as needed. b. Wash hands after helping a child with bathroom needs and changing diapers. c. Help children wash hands after bathroom and before each meal. d. Make sure children's noses are wiped, faces are clean, and shoes are tied. 9. Take temperatures in an axillary manner, as needed. 10. Clean and sanitize children's toys as required.
