Product & Process Quality Technician - Rolling Bay
Responsibilities Include:
• Actively participate in maintaining a zero-incident safety culture.
• Participate as a process manager in the Rolling Bay.
• Assist with the development of appropriate standards and measurements for Process Management by defining critical variables through control charting and process capability tools.
• Support the pursuit of a perfect process within their area but not letting perfect delay better. A perfect process produces world class quality both efficiently and profitably.
• Conduct quality checks of the material and processes on the shop floor for adherence to standards.
• Collect and analyze data for process and quality improvement.
• Provide day to day direction of hourly employees and supervisors to coordinate efforts between PPQ, Operations, Maintenance and Product Technology teams to help Commonwealth achieve its safety, recovery, quality, throughput, and uptime goals.
• Provide expertise, practical and administrative support to the PPQ Engineers/leads to facilitate efficient and effective execution of the ongoing process and product improvement– and development projects (drive best practices).
• Help improve current quality procedures and develop new procedures to improve quality and reduce scrap material.
• Attend/participate in the daily MRB Quality meeting in the disposition of material.
• Assist with the development and on-going revisions to Job Instructions and Layered Process Audits. Participate in any assigned Layered Process Audits.
• Use root cause analysis on process and quality issues including facilitation of advanced problem-solving techniques such as 5-Why, Fishbone Diagrams, A3’s and Cause Map.
• Identify possible or known quality defects and initiate immediate containment of material including proper documentation.
• Conduct the initial investigation and fact gathering required to complete a root cause analysis.
• Work with the operations group to determine the impact of inline defects to the order.
• Coach, lead, and train the work force on quality expectations and standards and to identify corrective actions of quality defects and causes of defects.
• Demonstrate effective team facilitation skills to engage cross-functional teams to deliver improvement results on time.
• Monitor, report, and make recommendations for improvement in Rolling Bay and plant quality issues.
• Attend/participate in the departmental daily report out meetings, sharing the daily quality metrics and bringing any concerning issues or leading indicators to light.
• Participate in the development of quality plans for the Rolling Bay department that supports the Business Unit’s strategic plan.
• Work as cross functional team member to make the Rolling Bay department successful in providing a high-quality product on time, in full, and safely.
Trial Support:
• Work with Product and R&D Engineers to develop trials and write trial requests as needed.
• Review trial requests and advise on feasibility, resources needed, data collection points, and non-standard tasks.
• Make practical arrangements with Production Planning to enable smooth trial runs.
• Coordinate trials between PPQ and Operations by communicating trial instructions and requirements to ensure complete understanding among all stakeholders.
• Coordinate and assist in the successful realization of the necessary sampling and testing on internal and external trial or production material.
• Collect data, ensure data is properly structured, archived, shared, and guarantee traceability in case of projects, claims, and customer questions.
Required Qualifications:
• 4-year BS degree or any equivalent combination of experience and education that provides the required knowledge and skills.
• Good understanding of the Aluminum rolling process preferred.
• Good understanding of mechanical functions.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• IATF and ISO experience and understanding.
• Knowledge of plant IT systems, Minitab, Excel, Word, and Power Point.
• Certified LSS green belt, statistical training, or TPS experience would be an asset.
