Job Goal
The academic specialist assists classroom teachers and students through collaborative planning, observing, coaching, resource development and facilitation. In addition, academic specialists may model systematic and explicit intervention for students.
Minimum Qualifications
• Highly qualified in designated content areas
• Master’s degree in education
• Knowledge of state standards and researched-based instruction
• Classroom teaching experience
• Demonstrated leadership skills
• Training and assistance to teachers who provide specially designed instruction to students with high incidence disabilities
Core Job Functions
• Create a classroom environment conducive to positive, effective instruction
• Facilitate instruction based on current research-based best practice
• Guide individual diagnostic testing to assess student needs
• Participate in team reviews concerning academic progress
• Participate in planning/preparatory meetings and activities
• Assist in planning and implementation of a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of students with disabilities
• Communicate objectives in a well-planned, organized manner using clear and precise language
• Communicate concerns and ideas with colleagues, students, and learning community in a positive, professional and ethical manner
• Maintain accurate, complete, legible and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulation
• Assume individual responsibilities which may be assigned by the supervisor and which may relate to committee work, activities, or other planning and professional assignments
• Collaborate with instructional services (curriculum, special education, Title, professional development) to actively seek out, develop and implement new and promising best practices and/or programs to increase learning opportunities for all students
• Develop and instruct professional development classes based on student achievement needs, site, and district goals
• Model research-based instructional techniques and strategies in the classroom as well as conducting professional development
• Disaggregate and analyze data and assist in the interpretation of the data to guide instruction and delivery
• Perform other duties relating to general job function as assigned by supervisor
