Position Summary
Provides comprehensive school health in the school district.  Completes comprehensive health assessments, develops care plans as appropriate, coordinates and collaborates with health care providers, teachers, and families on students with health needs.  Supervises the administration of various medications and treatments required by students during the school day. Maintains accurate and up-to-date health records of all students.  Promotes health and wellness, including those of preschool age students through adult staff members, by assessing, planning, evaluating and educating.  Conducts annual hearing, vision, scoliosis and color vision screening, re-screening, referral and follow-up, assessment and control of communicable, infectious diseases, immunization status assessment and makes appropriate assessments and referrals for all health concerns.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Annually schedules, coordinates and implements screening clinics for vision and hearing for all students, and pre-school screenings, plus referrals and follow-up contacts.  Annually schedules, coordinates and implements clinics for scoliosis, screenings, referrals and follow-up activities.  Annually schedules, coordinates and implements immunizations clinics in the schools, and evaluates immunization records of all students for compliance with State School Immunization Laws.
Provides health education presentations to classes and promotes health and wellness with students and staff.  Serves as a consultant to teachers and parents concerning students' health problems.  Assessment and control of communicable diseases.  Promotes general health and wellness in the school system, through home visits, assessment and referrals, observing normal growth and development of students, maintaining accurate records and reports of health for all students.
Trains and supervises paraprofessionals and other school staff in administration of medication and other medical treatments, such as nebulizer treatments, tube feedings, catheterizations, etc., necessary during the school day.  Attends workshops and training to maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills in daily school health practice.  Participates in other Public Health programs and activities including quality improvement, performance management, infectious and chronic disease prevention and control and public health preparedness as indicated.
Additional Public Health Nursing duties as outlined in the job description, relating to infectious and chronic disease prevention and control, community health assessment and planning, public health preparedness for bioterrorism and other biological threats to the public health.
Qualifications Graduate of National League for Nursing Accredited 4-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science or Arts Degree in Nursing (preferred) or a 2-year Associate Degree program as a Registered Nurse with a minimum of four (4) years of clinical experience as a Registered Nurse.  Current license to practice professional nursing as a Registered Nurse in Minnesota.  Public Health Nursing Certification in Minnesota preferred.  Child Health Screening training.  School Health Licensure preferred.  2 years’ experience working with children and parents in clinical settings in a hospital, clinic, or Public Health department, as a licensed Registered Nurse.  Independent decision-making and assessment experience.  Communication skills with individuals and groups.  Experience with and working knowledge of community resources
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities RN position is a Grade 9 with an entry hourly wage range of $29.54 to $33.12, DOQ.  RN position has a full earning potential of up to $41.63 per hour, DOQ.
PHN position is a Grade 10 with an entry hourly wage range of $31.02 to $34.78, DOQ.  PHN position has a full earning potential of up to $43.71 per hour, DOQ.
