Description

With supervision, the position performs technical work in management, research, and inventory efforts in the Northwestern Fisheries District Branch, including data collection, maintenance of equipment and facilities, and other duties as required.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Assist biologist in collecting fisheries data for annual monitoring and research activities. Duties include collecting and handling fish, using various fish and water sampling equipment, trailering, launching boat and driving boat while always using appropriate safety precautions.
• As directed, independently maintains department owned facilities, public boat ramps, courtesy docks and posting/maintaining regulation signs at all boat ramps. Duties include mowing, spraying herbicide on weeds, placing rock on jetties, and picking up trash.
• At direction of biologist, independently maintains project equipment including numerous boats and trailers, vehicles, ATVs, lawn mowers, trap nets, gill nets, aerators, small motors, and other equipment. Keeps equipment clean, repaired, and ready for use.
• Assist with building/maintaining fish habitat and attractors for district waterbodies. Duties include purchasing materials, heavy lifting, operating power tools and chain saw, trailering boat, launching boat, and driving boat while always using appropriate safety precautions.
Preferred Skills and Abilities:
• Candidates experienced with fisheries technical work is desired.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: High school graduate.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have one year of fishery, wildlife or habitat management/development experience.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Additional related training will substitute for the required experience on a year for year basis.
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Experience in fisheries, wildlife or habitat management/development will substitute for the required education on a year for year basis.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must possess a valid driver's license prior to appointment in this classification. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.

Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
