JOB SUMMARY: The Accessibility Specialist partners with fellow Academic Support Center (ASC) staff to provide academic accessibility accommodations, support, and advising to Gustavus students with disabilities (SWD) to ensure equitable student participation in the College’s’ educational program in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (1990/2008) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (1973). As a member of the Academic Support Center (ASC) team, the Accessibility Specialist will be devoted to strengthening efforts that enhance Gustavus student access, equity, and retention.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Academic Accessibility
• Support and work collaboratively with the Accessibility Coordinator in order to provide academic accessibility accommodations, support, and advising to Gustavus students with disabilities.
• Maintain current knowledge of disability law and regulations, accessible technology, and best practices regarding accessibility and higher education.
• Coordinate the testing accommodation process for SWD, including partnering with faculty to ensure that the accommodation is implemented effectively. Utilize Clockwork system to schedule exam rooms and monitor necessary accessible technology.
• Research, locate, and secure textbooks in alternative format for SWD, including managing multiple sources and communicating with publishers.
• Review academic course materials for accessibility, upon request or discovery. This includes but is not limited to, captioning videos and remediating documents to be compatible with text-to-speech resources.
• Comply with legal and regulatory matters related to academic accessibility resources, including consulting and cooperating with the ADA Compliance Officer.
• Maintain and develop understanding of various disabilities and their impact on student participation in college life. Consult with educators and healthcare providers to obtain specific information about student disabilities.
• Meet individually with students to review documentation and accommodation history.
• Review, evaluate, document, and maintain student health and educational records. Use this information to independently determine and coordinate final academic accommodation eligibility, with consideration to fundamental aspects of coursework and in compliance with ADA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
• Meet individually with SWD to provide direct training and troubleshooting regarding accessible technology, including text-to-speech software.
• Advise faculty and staff regarding the impacts of student disabilities and ways to provide equal academic access. Work creatively with faculty to explore possible alternative ways for students with disabilities to fulfill course learning objectives and outcomes.
• Meet with students and collaborate with campus partners and faculty to ensure timely academic accommodations for students with temporary disabilities.
• Be knowledgeable about Universal Design, inclusive teaching practices, and disability issues to inform and educate campus partners on these topics.
• Meet with prospective students and families to discuss potential academic accommodations and how they relate to the higher education environment.
Academic Support
• Respond to appropriate faculty-generated student academic flags and referrals submitted via the Starfish early alert system.
• Meet individually with students on Academic Warning or Probation to create and implement strategies to help improve academic standing and persist to graduation.
• Collaborate with ASC colleagues to carry out the ASC’s responsibilities related to new student registration and Gustie Gear-Up! , including, but not limited to, preparing internal and external materials, and collaborating with the Campus Activities Office and other campus partners to execute respective office responsibilities for new student registration.
Administration
• Support Clockwork, Read&Write, and other accessible technology services for SWD.
• Utilize office-wide technology needed to support the overall operations of the ASC, including the ASC website, Colleague, and other systems as required.
• Serve as interested and as appropriate (as determined by the Academic Support Center Director) on campus-wide committees, search committees, and other campus committees.
• Participate in appropriate internal (offered by Gustavus) and external (offered by professional organizations) professional development opportunities in order to enhance one’s knowledge of academic support, equity, and inclusion.
• Develop and maintain trusted working relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
• Work sensitively and diplomatically to address complex and confidential student needs.
• All other duties as assigned.
Prerequisites
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• High School degree.
• Excellent organizational, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s degree preferred.
• Experience working with students in a higher education setting.
• Experience in advising, counseling, tutoring, and/or disability services.
• Knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act (1990/2008) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (1973).
