By joining our Project Delivery & Preservation Branch II, Owensboro Section as a Highway Technician Assistant I in Daviess County, you will have the opportunity to take advantage of classroom and in-field training to allow for continued education to become specialized in road and construction maintenance operations.
Holders of the Highway Technician Assistant I position will complete tasks such as:
• Operate a tractor-type mowing machine, assist in brush cutting & use chemical sprayer.
• Haul materials to and from job sites. Perform minor repairs to equipment & vehicles.
• Operate a dump truck with snowplow & salt spreader in winter months.
• Flag for operations requiring traffic control.
Holders of this job will obtain the following skills:
• Learn & assist with basic surveying activities on construction projects.
• Learn to operate various types of heavy equipment such as road grater, backhoe & roller.
• Learn to perform minor repairs & maintenance work on equipment.
Desired candidates possess the following requisite skills or experience applicable to the position:
• Experience working on rough terrain & in changing climate.
• Basic experience in equipment operation for road maintenance.
• Experience completing shift or on-call schedule.
Additional information: Must possess a valid driver’s license, some travel will be required for professional trainings, incumbents in this job title must possess the ability to sit, stoop and bend. Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds. Must be able to respond to emergencies.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must be 18 years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license to qualify for employment in this job classification. Within 12 months of employment in this job classification, employees in this classification must furnish the agency's appointing authority with documentation that he or she holds a valid Class B commercial driver's license. Within one year of employment in this job classification, the employee must complete First Aid and Snow and Ice Training and must possess Traffic Control/Flagger and OSHA 10 Certifications or equivalent. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials.
Working Conditions
Incumbents in this job title typically perform their work at a highway maintenance facility or section office, at work sites throughout the assigned work area, and when necessary, district wide. Incumbent will be exposed to risks inherent to working with large equipment and machines involved with road construction. Must be able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
