The Machinist makes complicated machine, tool parts, and sub-assemblies to very close tolerance interrelationships to drawings and instructions. Perform necessary layout work and use any hand tools required. Set up and operate all machine shop equipment. Dismantle, clean, and paint equipment or parts as required. May direct the activities of less experienced employees. Perform other related duties. Essential Functions: Reads and interprets blueprints, or works from verbal or written instructions or from the part to be copied or fitted. Plans the setup and operation of all types of machine shop tools, considering types of material, tolerances, types of cutting tools, coolants, lubricants, and machine tool feeds and speeds. Heat-treats and welds parts as required. Determines specifications for inspection of work, using precision measuring and gauging tools, performing required inspection before, during, and after machining. Fits and assembles, fixtures, tools, Sets up, runs off parts, and tests parts to produce a product to specifications. Performs hand operations involved in producing fixtures, and machine tools. Uses all hand tools and machining equipment to include heat-treating equipment. Keep work areas clean, and perform other related duties as assigned. Additional Responsibilities May assist other machinists, maintenance mechanics, and machine shop personnel in machining setup and overhaul, as well as other machine-related activity. May direct the activities of less experienced employees. May work with product designers providing input to manufacturing capability on newly machined products. Requires a high degree of precision and control in work where damage could be high and where muscular control and delicate touch are required. Must be able to lift frequently heavy material and machine tools for placement on equipment. Possess good oral, written, and organizational skills. Must be able to work with various lubricants, oils, and solvents used in machining operations, as well as various materials to include ceramic material. Perform well under pressure. This position requires frequent heavy lifting of material and equipment, standing, stair climbing, lifting, stooping, bending and reaching motions, at various heights. Gloves and safety glasses required in some operations. Good vision required. Keep work areas clean, and perform other related duties as assigned. Certificates or Licenses Required Completion of a formal apprenticeship program in machine shop skills, and possess a certificate in Machine Tool Technology or have equivalent experience.
