The color guard coordinator recruits, auditions, choreographs, and teaches flag, dance and visual routines for the Marching & Spirit Bands which includes the Roanoke Color Guard. This person will participate in the flag design and equipment selection process and maintains the color guard equipment inventory. The color guard coordinator oversees all aspects of the winter guard, oversees the color guard track of The Roanoke Summer Music Academy, assists with care oversight of the instrument inventory, assists in planning and executing of any marching any spirit band related events, and assists with recruiting efforts for the RC band program.
Position serves during the academic year, is non-benefitted and works approximately 10-20 hours per week.
Key Responsibilities:
1.Oversees all aspects of the Roanoke College Color Guard program.
2.Recruits for the RC Color Guard and coordinates the spring auditions with the director of marching & spirit bands including building reservations, housing, etc.
3.Choreographs and teaches all routines for the color guard and band proper (as applicable), instructs the color guard at weekly rehearsals, and works with student leaders to plan student lead sectional rehearsals.
4.Plans all rehearsals for the color guard ensemble.
5.Assists with flag an equipment design and maintains the color guard equipment inventory.
6.Oversees the color guard student leadership team in conjunction with the Director of Marching & Spirit Bands,
7.Oversees the color guard track of The Summer Music Academy summer camps.
8.Assists with recruiting efforts for the RC band program (Open House recruiting events, marching band contests, indoor guard shows, RC Band Day, etc.)
9.Attends weekly staff meetings.
10.Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
11.Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses required by the director of marching & spirit Bands.
12.Helps to ensure the success of the band by performing all other duties assigned by the Director of Marching & Spirit Bands.
Education, Experience, Skills, and Abilities:
•Prior experience as a color guard performer, instructor and coordinator
•Knowledge in marching band and indoor color guard performance
•Exceptional communication and proven leadership skills
•Current First Aid, CPR, and AED certification or willingness to become certified.
•Must be available to work a flexible schedule, often in the late afternoons, evenings and on weekends.
