We are in the process of hiring an engineer for the position of Industrial Safety and Hygiene Engineer for a cheese and dairy processing plant. This position requires a high level of English, availability to travel, and the ability to relocate to Minnesota, USA. The Industrial Safety and Hygiene Engineer provides health and safety support to division and corporate personnel by developing and administering health and safety programs. This position drives safety performance and culture through objectives and training programs. This role promotes continuous improvement and provides technical support to the leadership teams of the manufacturing facilities. RESPONSIBILITIES: - Manage and continuously improve training programs that meet OSHA requirements and develop safe working behaviors. - Promote occupational health and safety programs and policies, working directly with division safety coordinators on the preparation, administration, facilitation, and compliance of safety programs, policies, and initiatives. - Lead industrial hygiene programs including medical testing, physical examinations, respiratory tests, fit tests; coordinate the monitoring of asbestos, lead, hexavalent chromium, and other contaminant levels as required by their respective standards; conduct other monitoring activities as necessary, including but not limited to noise, carbon monoxide, and heat exposure. - Conduct formal and informal audits and inspections of practices and records at manufacturing plants to ensure compliance with company programs and federal/state occupational safety and health regulations. Document issues, drive, and ensure corrective action. - Serve as a subject matter expert with a complete understanding of federal and state (Minnesota and Iowa) occupational safety and health regulations and Department of Transportation regulations related to motors. - Monitor and direct regulatory changes as they occur, ensuring compliance. - Act as the organization’s liaison for relevant government agencies (OSHA, Emergency Management, DOT, etc.) and serve as a representative in cases of inquiries and inspections. Follow up on all activities and ensure corrective actions are taken to close cases with the respective agencies. - Maintain certifications and continuously seek ways for the department's growth and improvement. - Identify, create, and maintain employee records and training for relevant occupational health and safety and DOT topics. - Conduct annual regulatory training for all employees. - Collaborate with all departments and divisions to ensure that occupational health and safety regulatory requirements are understood and supported. - Promote technical safety and health awareness through internal company communications, such as newsletters, 5-minute safety talks, best practices, and specific training programs. - Support effective two-way communication with all employees by promoting safety committees, floor time, and shift changes with health and safety information. - Support corporate plant services and quality assurance to implement engineering controls and food safety while minimizing occupational safety and health risks for employees. - Review plans and specifications for new machinery and equipment to ensure they meet occupational health and safety requirements and regulations. - Identify and develop corrective actions for potential hazards through facility, machinery, and safety equipment audits. - Develop, evaluate, and improve safety protection or control mechanisms for all equipment and tools. - Review plant safety committee meeting minutes and safety inspection reports. - Evaluate and initiate improvements for personal protective equipment. Support plant personnel in selecting appropriate personal protective equipment. - Work closely with division managers and senior leadership on capital safety improvements and the occupational health and safety budget process. - Oversee the management of all DOT driver files, random drug tests, and DOT documentation in the company’s electronic system. - Develop clear safety objectives and goals that lead the organization to high standards of health and safety performance. - Utilize and analyze safety and health metrics, trends, and data to understand what is working well and where there are gaps. Provide rapid response and reprioritization of programs to prevent injuries and risks. - Deliver annual improvements in occupational health and safety programs based on internal and external KPIs. - Implement a Safety Leadership Team that includes Company Senior Management, meeting at least quarterly. - Manage the AMPI workers’ compensation program, serving as the primary interface between the workers’ compensation insurer, medical providers, council, and regulatory representatives. - Closely monitor lost time injuries/illnesses and workers’ compensation claims. - Review injury/illness and near-miss investigation reports and follow up as necessary. - Work with operations teams to ensure timely completion of event investigations, evaluate the cause(s) of incidents, and identify corrective actions as necessary, ensuring actions are completed. - Support manufacturing plant safety coordinators with all occupational safety and health incidents, ensuring employee care, internal investigation, follow-up actions, and obligations with external stakeholders such as local and federal regulators. - Compile, timely report, and maintain annual OSHA-required reports and documentation. Support manufacturing plant safety coordinators to ensure accurate and timely claims are made. - Perform other duties as assigned. REQUIREMENTS: - Degree and professional license in Industrial, Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, Environmental, Biochemical Engineering, or a related field. - 3 to 5 years of work experience in occupational health and safety and/or human resources. - Advanced English (It is imperative and critical that applicants can read and understand technical materials.) - Driver’s license - Intermediate level in other Microsoft Office products. - Must be willing to take the OSHA 511 course (paid by the company) upon hire. - This position requires approximately 50% travel. Mileage is reimbursed at the IRS recommended rate.
