JOB SUMMARY: The primary purpose of this position is to provide leadership for and management of the Residential Life Office, work closely with the Dean of Students and other Student Life staff in integrating students’ academic and out-of-class lives, provide a safe, supportive and inclusive environment within the residence halls that is conducive to academic achievement and overall personal growth for all students, including students from underrepresented groups, develop and maintain excellent collaborative working relationships with students and their families, faculty, administrators, staff and external constituents, and to interpret College objectives, policies, rules, and regulations to students, and to interpret student attitudes, opinions, and actions to appropriate administrative officials.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Lead and manage the Residential Life Office including: strategic planning; assessment and evaluation; fiscal responsibility; facility management; personnel selection, training, supervision and evaluation; departmental operations; policy and procedure; emergency response; online and print publications, including website; departmental communication.
• Implement, assess and revise an outcome-based residential curriculum that fosters student learning, growth and development for individuals and within the campus community.
• Ensure the enforcement of College rules and regulations.  Uphold the Statement of Student Responsibilities by engaging students in reflective learning and accountability via the College student conduct system.
• Provide direct support services to students regarding housing or other personal/academic concerns, referring to on- and off-campus programs and services as appropriate.
• Facilitate the adjustments of students new to Gustavus community, the college experience, and residence hall life and to help new students acquire a sense of belonging within the Gustavus community.
• Perform and/or supervise all administrative tasks relating student housing (including first-year assignments, mid-year returns, the housing selection process, and all occupancy records and statistics); formulate policies to govern residential life; to supervise and administer the hall damage account system; provide off-campus information for students and to administer the College’s off-campus housing policy; communicate with administrative offices directly or indirectly affected by student housing matters; interpret to faculty, staff, parents, and guests the nature and purpose of the Gustavus’ residence hall program and its staff within the total educational program of the College.
• Promote the safety of student residents, their property, and the property of the College; serve as a member of the Student Assistance and Threat Assessment Teams; provide on-call support for student emergency response.
• Provide for resident students a comfortable, pleasant, and stimulating living environment; be a liaison with the Facilities Management office in responding to reports of needed repairs or improvements (including maintenance, renovation, and furniture/carpet consulting).
• Recruit, train, direct, and evaluate residential life personnel; maintain regular communication with staff through in-services and staff meetings.
• Participate in appropriate divisional and College-wide committees, programs, and planning activities.
• Invest in on-going training and professional development; develop professional relationships with colleagues at comparable institutions within the region and across the country by participating as appropriate in state, regional and national professional organizations.
• All other duties as assigned.
Prerequisites
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s Degree
• Demonstrated success in crisis intervention & conflict resolution
• Demonstrated success in coordinating all aspects of the housing process (occupancy management, housing selection, etc)
• Demonstrated ability to effectively manage complex budgets
• Proven knowledge of student development theory and a commitment to leadership development
• Excellent organization and communication skills with a wide range of constituencies
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity and to fostering a collaborative multicultural environment
• Ability to coordinate multiple programs and job duties simultaneously
• Availability as an emergency contact on a rotating basis with some evening and weekend responsibilities expected.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Minimum of 5-7 years of progressively responsible experience within student affairs
• Supervision of full-time professional staff
• Involvement within professional associations/organizations
• Proven ability to collaborate and build alliances among diverse campus constituencies
