Under the direction of the general manager, the general sales manager assumes responsibility for customer retention and profitability in the new- and used- vehicle profit centers. Fulfills responsibilities primarily through effective personnel management, knowledge of market potential, established performance standards and a keen awareness of each department’s break-even data in accordance with company policies and procedures. Essential Responsibilities: This list of duties and responsibilities is not all inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time: Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Trains sales employees to tactfully handle customer inconveniences, misunderstandings, and complaints promptly and with genuine concern for the customer’s problem. Manager provides support and intervenes where necessary to ensure customers are handled in accordance with the dealership and manufacturer’s standards. Participates in the preparation of the annual dealership forecast by projecting unit sales, gross profits, expenses, and operating profits for the new- and used-sales departments. Meets with sales manager to establish annual and monthly objectives for unit sales, gross profits, expenses and operating profit. Ensures sales manager and sales consultants understand dealership policies, procedures and systems. Works with Dealer to determine appropriate days’ supply for new and used vehicles and orders/acquires vehicle inventory accordingly. Establishes standards for displaying, merchandising and maintain new and used vehicles. Establishes procedures for quick disposal of over-aged vehicles. Issues demos and ensures appropriate dealership records are maintained. Checks condition of demos monthly. Audits repair orders for used vehicles as needed to ensure prompt reconditioning. Meets with Dealer to review monthly forecasts, commission sheets, productivity reports, and the profit performance of each department as a whole and each salesperson individually. Studies local market conditions, demographics, and past sales history. Makes recommendations to the Dealer regarding short- and long-range advertising plans, sales promotions, staffing needs, lease promotions, and compensation plans. Conducts major sales promotions and advertising as needed. Turns 100 percent of closed deals to finance and insurance manager, along with properly completed paperwork (insurance information, trade title etc.). Approves all sales incentives in writing before submitting to the business office. Audits all appraisals of trade-in vehicles. Attends auctions as needed. Reviews and approves all deals before they are posted. Facilitates new-vehicle pre-delivery with the service manager. Makes sure the facility is secure, well lit, clean and professional in appearance. Maintain a customer feedback system that makes it easy for customers to comment or complain. Continually evaluate customer feedback and take immediate action to resolve problems and improve the level of customer service. Maintains CSI scores that meet and strive to exceed goals. Implement action plan to improve customer satisfaction. Keep employees informed of customer satisfaction goals and their impact on overall scores. Development and adherence to sales budget. Manages posted documents, vehicle deals, commissions and additions and changes to inventory. Approves adjustments to inventory and receivable accounts. Stays abreast of current factory incentives and codes deliveries in the dealership system. Administers charge-back program for late charges to inventory. Prepares monthly floor-plan report within General Motors equity guidelines. Prepares sales commissions/chargeback detail reports. Complies information and prepares reports as requested by management and/or Dealer Principal. Assigns stock numbers to new and used vehicles and assists with paperwork. Manage GM programs, such as SFE, EBE, CSI and other applicable enrollments. Establishes and promotes the maintenance of a safe, accident free, and healthy work environment by ensuring compliance with local, state and federal rules and regulations. Trains employees, compiles and submits reports, maintains programs and files, and completes appropriate inspections. Coordinates building and grounds maintenance work. Serves as liaison between sales department and other departments. Assisting in process troubleshooting as needed, including being a technical resource as needed. Assisting in the development and implementation of capital projects and related budgets. Proactively manages all infrastructures including developing long-term plan for service department upgrades as needed. Identify and present capital improvement projects to support facility infrastructure needs and improvements. Adhere to all Safety policies and procedures, reporting any nonconformity. Maintains technical knowledge in areas of responsibility by attending educational workshops, attends manager meetings, reviewing publications, researching topics, establishing personal networks, and participating in dealership training. Detail oriented, be quality minded. Maintain a valid drivers’ license and an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR). Punctual and regular attendance. Education/Experience · High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required. · Bachelor’s degree preferred or a combination of education and relevant work experience. 5+ years automotive experience in sales. 5+ years supervisory experience preferred. Industry specific software experience preferred. 5+ years relevant work experience preferred. Basic understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
