Position Summary Repair and maintain equipment for the Brown County Highway Department, Heartland Express Bus system, and Sheriff’s Department so that proper service can be delivered to the public. Service and maintenance of all vehicles and equipment is checked and completed as recommended by the manufacturer or in accordance with department policy. The job also assists with year round maintenance of county highways, bridges and equipment through repair of roads and bridges or by clearing snow and ice from roadways, so that the public can travel and transport goods in a safe and efficient manner.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities • Repair of county equipment which includes trucks, heavy equipment, motor vehicles, Heartland Express Buses and Sheriff's Department vehicles.
• General maintenance of county equipment.
• Fabrication of attachments and special equipment.
• Drive tandem truck or motor grader for snow plow operations.
• Drive water truck or other equipment during seasonal work.
• Assist with bridge painting and guard rail repair.
• Assist with signing roads.
• Engine overhaul.
• Repair electrical equipment.
• Repair hydraulic equipment.
• Certify vehicles.
• Use computer for equipment maintenance records.
• On a routine basis, works closely with other mechanic, county highway employees, Heartland Express personnel, and Sheriff’s Department. Also works with Flandrau State Park employees and, in emergencies, Sheriff's deputies.
Qualifications Education/Experience :
• Two years of education at a vocational/technical training school with courses in Diesel Mechanics or closely related field.
OR
• High school diploma or GED and five years of experience working in a service department as a mechanic doing work on trucks and large equipment under an experienced mechanic. Work experience should include gasoline and diesel engine repair, vehicle electrical and hydraulic systems, transmissions, welding, metal fabricating, and general repair.  Preferred experience to include working for a highway construction firm or highway maintenance department, with experience operating light and heavy construction equipment. Must have some knowledge of the construction materials used and the safe handling of these materials.
Requirements :
• General knowledge of highway construction and maintenance is required.
• Class "A" drivers license (CDL).
• Commercial Vehicle Inspection Certificate.
• Live within 30 minutes of main garage.
• Pass drug and alcohol test and adhere to County/Federal drug and alcohol requirements for safety sensitive positions.
• Air conditioner certification to comply with the Clean Air Act of 1990.
• Knowledge of ABS brakes, computerized engines and transmissions.
• Be able to assign jobs and work with other employees.
• Computer training or experience.
• Be certified or be able to become certified as a Class A and B operator for underground fuel tanks.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Position is a Grade 8 with an entry hourly wage range of $28.14 to $31.55, DOQ.  Position has a full earning potential of up to $39.66 per hour, DOQ.
