Central Office Technician
Major Duties
Classification: Non-Exempt, Bargaining
The Central Office Technician supports the installation and maintenance of all network systems. Responsible for the management and maintenance of all IP Centric Central Office equipment that encompasses all Data product offerings where applicable.
Performs job duties consistent within safety, legal, and regulatory requirements; company standards, culture and business practices. Acts with the highest level of business and personal ethical standards in all aspects of job performance.
Responsibilities
• Installs and maintains all network systems. Systems may include but are not limited to Voice Switches, Digital Cross Connects, Fiber Multiplexers, IPTV Head End, Voicemail Systems, IP based DSLAMS, Digital Loop Carriers, Power Rectifiers and Battery Plants, Fiber to Home CO Terminals, Special Access Circuits.
• Ensures all network systems are working at prescribed levels.
• Seek and take the initiative to improve the quality of delivery of network services and network maintenance.
• Required to read and interpret technical manuals and other documentation when installing new equipment and/or trouble shooting network problems.
• Performs trouble shooting and repair of network problems.
• Assists outside plant personnel as needed.
• Participates on the on-duty rotation schedule.
• Interprets data, determines how information interrelates and resolves discrepancies within data.
• Integrates a variety of services into the coordination of various independent functions
• Provides solutions to a variety of problems.
• Requires a working knowledge of rules and interpretations within functional area.
• Maintains the IPTV head end equipment where applicable.
• Responsible for the maintenance and configuration of DSLAM, IP Switch, BRAS, and routers associated with the Internet and IPTV Network.
• Oversees Network troubleshooting, planning and evaluation
• Maintains knowledge of TCP/IP, Radius and DNS, CAT5 wiring and Wireless (802.11B/G/N).
• Oversees DSL provisioning, troubleshooting, and record creation maintenance and updates.
• Prepares for and completes activities including moving, changing, installing, configuring, repair and/or removal of data communications equipment by reviewing and following work orders and other documentation.
• Supports sales and installations of our broadband, T1, FTTH, DSL and Metro Ethernet services by providing over the phone and on-site support of our staff.
• Supports IPTV, Internet and FTTH installation by troubleshooting connectivity performance issues at customer locations with a technician on site.
• Performs daily provisioning, monitoring and troubleshooting of data network.
• Repairs and provides preventative maintenance on all data equipment.
• Installs and troubleshoots special service circuits DS3, DS0, T1s etc.
• Creates and runs data scripts for provisioning, troubleshooting and maintenance of data equipment, which may include the creation and maintenance of online data base.
• Maintains vehicle, tools and test equipment.
• Does basic maintenance and exercises generators at a variety of sites.
• Responsible for being “on call” for central office alarms and other central office problems. Contributes to departmental activities and programs by accomplishing related tasks as needed.
• Must be knowledgeable in and abide by all National Electrical Safety Codes and Company practices.
• May be required to perform additional tasks/responsibilities not listed herein, as required by the Company.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
• Networking and Electronics Proficiency
• Valid State Driver’s License and satisfactory driving record
• Intermediate to advanced Computer Skills
• Knowledge of procedures and practices of various levels within functional area.
• Proficient with hand tools and power tools.
Required Education & Experience:
In order to accomplish the essential duties of this position, the incumbent must have an Associate's Degree (A. A.) or equivalent in work experience.
