College Academic Advisor (10.5 Month Position)

Responsibilities Build and sustain a school-wide culture of attending college, technical school or post-secondary career options. Focus on building post-secondary career options through workforce/trade programs, military, and ROTEC (Career and Technical Education Center). Support William Fleming High School graduates in college with periodic personal check-ins, mentoring, and social networking. (Social Media). Assist students in navigating the college search and application process. Facilitate college admission and financial aid workshops for students and parents. Track and report key student performance indicators to school leadership and counseling on a monthly basis. (student scholarships, college/program applications, college/program acceptances) Ensure all eligible students apply to a 2 - year and 4 - year college program. Support scholarship search, application, and award processes for students. Maintain external relationships to bring services or opportunities to the school. (College representations, HBCU Fair Assistance, Virginia Tech Upward Bound, guest speakers) Assist with Virginia Western Community College CCAP Program. Plan and execute college nights that will assist our students in the college process. Support and facilitate concurrent enrollment with local colleges as appropriate. Follow up with students after graduation (calls, emails, coordinated advisor outreach) to identify and problem-solve barriers to college matriculation. Develop and maintain relationships with colleges. Cultivate relationships with community organizations. Develop a student alumni network that will provide support to current high school students and prospective/incoming college students. Develop a system for post-graduate tracking. Assist as support with ACT/SAT testing. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications B.A. or B.S. required Education/Counseling/Sociology/Psychology. Experience working in the educational advising field. Experience working with parents and families, especially those from less-advantaged backgrounds. Successful work experience with youth. Strong professional collaborative skills. Excellent communication skills. Ability to work well under pressure and adapt easily. WORK ENVIRONMENT Primarily controlled temperature and clean classroom environment. Exposure to outside elements may occur during transitions, field trips, and recess.
