Position Summary: The Billing Specialist is responsible for Billing EMS (Ambulance) and Self-Pay. They will also provide leadership and technical support for patient billing. Schedule: This is a Full Time position Monday – Friday 8:00am-5:00pm, totaling 80 hours bi-weekly. Qualifications: Education : Minimum of high school degree. College degree preferred. Experience : Healthcare Experience recommended Experience : Healthcare billing and insurance knowledge preferred Certifications: Preferred through AAPC or AHIMA General Tasks & Responsibilities: Charge Master Committee Member ACO Steering Committee Member Compliance Committee Member Other duties as assigned Specific Tasks & Responsibilities: Billing for EMS & self-pay Monitor and work in Bedrock 835 Variance queues R1 billing liaison Charges outside dates of service Encounters without charges Pending biller review (both edit/denial) Follow up on claims, refile when necessary Authorization back-up Posting Accounts Receivable back-up Educational programs, in-services, meetings, and insurance seminars as needed Denial & rejection management Work-queue management Speak with patients about billing questions Patient financial counselor back-up AP Refund queue Billing Technical Responsibilities: Plays a role in month end closing activities as well as builds relationships and problem solves with key clinical stakeholders. Monitor clearinghouse rejections Engage in timely filing and forwarding updates. Follow-up on outstanding and denied claims, refile when necessary. File secondary payer claims. Monitor and address issues reflected in financial and Accounts Receivable Aging reports. Know and ensure accuracy of process documents. Provide effective resolution to patient billing inquiries. Research outstanding patient balances and takes necessary collection actions to resolve them in a timely manner. Understands the basics of insurance policies: Understand the changing needs of the insurance companies and how that relates to the patients and their balances. Understand EOB / COB data. Backup to patient collection activities, such as working aged accounts/AR reports to ensure timely and appropriate optimal reimbursement. Must attend departmental meetings Utilize billing policies and procedures Assists with medical necessity determinations Able to distinguish cases which require additional input from physicians and route to them professional, concise notes for clarification. Responsible for informing, discussing, and educating providers, nurses, and billing staff about billing guidelines regarding missing documentation and other forms of communication Quality review meets or exceeds established standards. Use manuals, Internet, and any other available resources to perform job duties.
