Position Summary: The Health Information Specialist is responsible for oversight of all Medical Records and is the HIPPA Privacy Officer for Madelia Health. Schedule: This is a Full Time position Monday – Friday 8:00am-5:00pm, totaling 80 hours bi-weekly. Qualifications: Education : Bachelor’s degree preferred. Experience : Healthcare Revenue Cycle Management functions. Certifications: Preferred: Medical Records, AAPC, AHIMA or NAMMS General Tasks & Responsibilities: Charge Master Committee Member R1 liaison Other duties as assigned Specific Tasks & Responsibilities: Patient Financial Counselor Meeting with patients to assist with payment plans Providing elective service estimates and collecting down payments Assist patients with alternative assistance (county, MNsure etc.) Daily AR Monitoring Self-Pay Collections Answering AR/collections phone calls Denial & Rejection management Posting AR Charity Care Bankruptcy Appeal management Work with collection agency on patients account Denial & rejection management Credit card work items Billing Technical Responsibilities: Acts as a patient advocate by assisting patients in reviewing other financial resources that may be available to them. Monitor Accounts Receivable, and report A/R days and adjustment findings to CFO or designee, on a monthly basis. Set up payment plans with patients according to practice guidelines. Review the daily appointment schedule to determine patient balances that are due and flag these for collection by the Front Desk. Process patient statements and send to vendor on set schedule. Responsible for working the aging report for patient balances with the appropriate follow up done on a timely basis. Follow up may include, but is not limited to, phone calls to the patient, setting payment arrangements according to practice policy, collection letters and direct contact with patients at the practice. Handle bankruptcy accounts, return mail (patient statements) and return checks according to the practices policies. Work monthly credit reports requesting appropriate refunds and posting and mailing refunds after checks are printed. Makes recommendations to leadership when patient accounts are ready to be turned over to a collection agency. Works with collection companies as liaison to manage accounts in collection. Turn over accounts as approved to the collection agency. Monitor collection agencies effectiveness and return. Understands the basics of insurance policies. Must attend departmental meetings Utilize billing policies and procedures Assists with medical necessity determinations Able to distinguish cases which require additional input from physicians and route to them professional, concise notes for clarification. Responsible for informing, discussing, and educating providers, nurses, and billing staff about billing guidelines regarding missing documentation and other forms of communication Quality review meets or exceeds established standards. Use manuals, Internet, and any other available resources to perform job duties. Continuous Quality Improvement Identifies opportunities to address improvement activities. Works with the MH team to design and implement solutions. Seeks self-development activities to improve knowledge and skills pertinent to MH goals.
