The University of Virginia Division of Student Affairs invites applications for two Program Coordinators for Student Engagement. The University’s mission to develop engaged citizen-leaders is the foundation of the Division of Student Affairs work, which is guided by six core values – academic rigor, diversity and inclusion, health and wellness, honor, public service, and student self-governance. The Division consists of over 200 employees all working together, for and alongside students, to create the distinctive student experience for which UVA is known. Student Engagement serves as a catalyst for holistic leadership development, facilitating connections to resources and nurturing student passions. At UVA, it acts as a pivotal point for student self-governance, offering guidance to the University Programs Council (UPC), the student-led programming board and over 800 student organizations. Additionally, it coordinates a spectrum of leadership and personal development opportunities for students. Candidates should express interest in one or both positions in their Cover Letter. Position #1 - Leadership , Public Service, and Newcomb Hall Info Desk operations Reporting to the Director of Student Engagement, this position is responsible for coordinating and implementing learning centered student leadership programs, coordination of volunteerism/public service opportunities, and management of the Newcomb Hall Information Desk, including supervision and development of student staff. Key Responsibilities Leadership Development Mentor, train, advise and/or supervise student leaders of existing student-led leadership programs - Blueprint leadership program for first- and second-year students, and Women’s Leadership Development Program (WLDP) . Develop new, innovative leadership development programs tailored to meet students' needs and foster their personal and professional growth. Collaborate with Student Engagement staff to coordinate Adult- ish , a programming series focused on life skills and ongoing development for students. Collaborate in the development of the CIO Summit, a mandatory leadership development and training program for all recognized student organizations. Create and execute a comprehensive leadership and staff development series tailored specifically for student employees at Newcomb Hall. Public Service Participate as a member of the Planning Team for the Public Service Pathways (PSP) program, a collaborative initiative across various university entities including the Office of the Provost, Division of Student Affairs, Karsh Institute of Democracy, and Madison House, the independent volunteer center for students at the University of Virginia. The PSP program aims to facilitate student engagement in public service by providing pathways for connection and involvement. Facilitate seamless communication and effective exchange of programmatic information, data, and ideas between Student Engagement and the Public Service Pathways (PSP) program. Strengthen the PSP Student Advisory Council by providing mentorship and leadership development training to empower student members. Build and maintain relationships with service-oriented student organizations, fostering strong connections and facilitating opportunities for students at-large to engage with these groups. Build and maintain relationships with current and prospective community partners, locally and nationally, and with university stakeholders such as students, faculty, and staff, to maximize opportunities for service-learning engagement. Information Desk Manage the operations of the Newcomb Hall Information Desk, acting as a central hub for welcoming UVA visitors, assisting event clients and guests within the building, and facilitating printing services for student organizations. Offer leadership, guidance, and comprehensive training to student employees, ensuring they are equipped to handle their responsibilities effectively Collaborate with Event Management and Building Operations to ensure staff coverage aligns with building and event needs. Positio n #2 – 1515 University Avenue (satellite student center) Reporting to the Assistant Director for Student Engagement, this role entails overseeing the programming and operations of 1515 University Avenue, UVA’s satellite student center situated on “The Corner,” a bustling hub for social activity near the University of Virginia’s Central Grounds. The Program Coordinator will provide leadership, supervision, and guidance to ensure the center effectively meets the needs of the university community. Key Responsibilities Programming & Operations Oversee daily operations, ensure event spaces, lounges, and game room are prepared for use, and serve as point of contact for concerns raised by students and clients. Collaborate closely with the Career Center staff who have offices in 1515 to foster strong relationships and address any needs. Responsibility for program budgeting, expenditure management, and ensuring financial transparency and accountability. This role concentrates on overseeing smaller-scale budgets dedicated to supporting specific programs or initiatives tailored to meet the immediate needs of students or communities. Lead the development and execution of activities, programs, and services led by Student Engagement. Spearhead initiatives to develop and support thematic programs aligned with strategic objectives to enhance student engagement and increase building usage. Facilitate the integration of programs and services offered by partners within the Division of Student Affairs to bring their resources and support directly to students. Collaborate with Student Organizations and Departments to coordinate "Take Overs" of 1515 for special events throughout the entire facility. Supervision & Management Oversee a team of undergraduate student staff charged with daily operations and programmatic responsibilities at 1515. Provide guidance, support, and mentorship to ensure the smooth functioning of the facility and successful execution of programs. Hire, train, evaluate, and offer professional development opportunities for student employees to foster growth within their roles and prepare them for success post-graduation. Establish clear expectations and objectives for student staff, ensuring these align with the team's overall success. Clearly communicating goals, responsibilities, and performance metrics, and provide regular feedback and support to student staff. Marketing Develop comprehensive marketing and communication standards, strategies, and practices to elevate 1515 as a distinguished brand and a premier destination for students on Grounds. Collaborate closely with the Student Affairs Communications & Technology team to leverage their expertise and support as needed. Collaborate with the Student Engagement marketing team to implement a dynamic and engaging strategy both online and in person for sharing 1515 programs, services, and mission with the broader community. Other responsibilities for both positions include: Administration Assess programs, events, trainings, etc. to measure effectiveness and progress towards intended outcomes; utilize data to adjust future planning. Utilize constant assessment and reporting to develop both long- and short-term plans for team growth and service improvement. Conduct informal assessments to evaluate the effectiveness of specific programs and services. Under a senior staff member's guidance, collaborate with colleagues to suggest adjustments or improvements as needed. Assist in developing departmental goals, objectives, and budgets. Responsibility for program budgeting, spending funds, and ensuring financial transparency and accountability. Serve on Division and University committees as assigned. Support Student Engagement and Student Affairs initiatives as needed. Minimum Requirements : Education: Bachelor's degree. Experience: At least two years of relevant work experience. Experience as an undergraduate or graduate student will be considered. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Experience with advising others. Developed ability to supervise and work alongside students and student leaders within a highly student self-governed environment. Understanding student development, identity development, intersections, and complexity of social identities. Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to coordinate resources, evaluate information, and identify alternative solutions. Attention to detail with excellent organizational skills, including proven ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, determine priorities, and meet deadlines. Ability to work independently and as part of a team, and to develop mutually beneficial relationships with various University partners. Personal characteristics including innovation, creativity, the ability to work with diverse groups of people, being a self-starter who can thrive in an environment that is developing, growing, and changing. Preferred Qualifications: Education: Master’s degree in student affairs, higher education administration, or related field. Direct work experience at the full-time or graduate level within a college or university office of student engagement, student activities, leadership, service, or public service; or similar work within the college or university environment. Experience in program and event planning with a leadership or service focus. Experience with training/workshop development with a leadership focus. Details and Application Process The hiring range for these positions is $45,000.00-$55,000.00, commensurate with qualifications and experience. These are exempt-level positions with UVa benefits.
