Job Summary Responsible for providing technical support, customer assistance and library services for the County Library. Duties include working at the circulation desk and checking books in/out; assisting customers with locating materials; conducting reference searches; and instructing patrons on the use of library materials and materials.
*This is a part-time position not intended to work more than 29 hours per week.
Job Functions ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
• Performs tasks at the circulation desks, including checking library books in and out, registering patrons for a borrower’s card, issuing new cards, preparing books to be shelved and maintaining records and tabulations.
• Reserves books and other materials as requested by patrons, notifies patrons of availability of reserved materials; locates and orders books on interlibrary loan; mails back interlibrary loans upon patron’s return of book/material
• Determines status of loaned materials via computer records and determines fines owed on overdue materials; collects fines for overdue and lost materials, and fees for use of copiers
• Provides reference assistance for patrons; locates materials; suggests resources in other libraries; searches for information on the Internet
• Answers phones and provides requested information, researches reference questions or refers caller to appropriate staff
• Provides reader’s advisory to all ages; advises patrons concerning choice of books or materials for themselves or for their children
• Instructs patrons in the use of library equipment and reference tools, including public access computers, public printer stations, microfiche, etc.; supervises patron’s use of Internet.
• Receives and responds to patron complaints and/or keeps Library Director informed of same
• Trains new employees and volunteers as needed
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
• Assists with reading shelves to keep books and materials in proper order; Reorganizes books which are incorrectly shelved
• Performs a variety of clerical duties in support of assigned functions including filing, answering phones, etc.
• Performs related duties as required
Qualifications Education and Experience:
Education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma with 2 years of experience working in a library or customer service setting.
Special Qualifications:
Must possess satisfactory results of a criminal history background check.
Bilingual, preferred but not required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Requires the ability to calculate, compute, summate, and/or tabulate data and/or information; Includes the ability to perform subsequent actions in relation to these computational operations
• Requires the ability provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others on how to apply procedures and standards to specific situations
• Requires the ability to operate varied office equipment such as telephones, computer terminals, copiers, etc.
• Requires the ability to utilize a variety of advisory data and information, such as library catalogs, reference materials and guides, program policies and regulations, and other library materials
• Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, to prepare statistical information
• Requires ability to apply principles of rational systems; ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives
• Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria
Working Conditions & Disclaimer PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position classifies the physical exertion requirements as moderate. Tasks typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. May involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds). Requires the ability to perform skilled coordinated movements, such as operating varied office equipment. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds. Some tasks require oral communications ability. Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Essential functions are regularly performed in a library. Tasks are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
