Position Summary
The UGA College of Environment & Design ( CED ) has maintained the Founders Memorial Garden ( FMG ), a 2.5-acre historic public garden, since it was developed in 1938 to teach landscape architecture students plant form and use in designed spaces. The FMG Director and Curator manages this living laboratory for instruction and research purposes, as well as the health, safety, and welfare of the visiting public (faculty, staff, students, alums, citizens of Athens, and out-of-town guests) who access it 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. It has a visually prominent location on UGAs historic north campus. It is used for instruction and research and requires a trained professional with an enhanced set of horticultural skills and artistry to care for the garden properly. An American Society of Landscape Architects ( ASLA ) Centennial award winner, the site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and must be curated to consistently high standards. The successful applicant must be knowledgeable in horticulture, planting design, and contemporary garden maintenance techniques, as well as have an appreciation for the history of the site and its role in UGA , CED , Athens, and Garden Club history because they will interact with the public to convey that message.
The successful applicant will have an appreciation for the history of the garden and may consult with CEDs Historic Preservation faculty, as well as historic preservation members of the FMG Advisory Board, regarding standards and guidelines for the needs of the historic designed landscape and its historic buildings.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
• Learn and be able to explain the site's history and role in UGA , CED , Athens, and Garden Club history.
• The successful applicant will have relevant experience with garden collection curation and plant and garden maintenance and incorporate excellent record-keeping and management skills with all FMG operations.
• For proper garden maintenance, the applicant shall hold certifications for applying pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides necessary for ornamental gardens.
• If the applicant does not have those certifications, they should be able to obtain them within six months of their hire date.

• Supervise and perform grounds maintenance duties, including mowing, weeding, leaf removal, pruning, and operating various types of grounds equipment, including mowers, backpack blowers, weed trimmers, and edgers

As FMG Head Horticulturalist, the expectation is twofold: work in tandem and advise the CED FMG Advisory Committee regarding plant material needs for instructional and research purposes and physical sculpting of the garden by working with and supervising student workers to do the same. As a living laboratory, the enhanced horticultural skill set the successful applicant brings will be critical for making short and long-term decisions about plant materials and planting design .
• Manage and maintain the grounds and all FMG resources.
• Schedule, instruct, and supervise students employed to work in the Garden to make the curation goals a reality.
• Add or remove plant materials in the garden for functional, aesthetic and instructional needs.
• Monitor the garden and make changes to improve the growing conditions (e.g., soil diseases, pruning for sun/shade, etc.)
• Work with all UGA approved contractors to assist with the ongoing maintenance of the garden.
• Curation tasks may include mowing, debris removal, leaf and limb pickup, fertilization, pruning, spraying, and irrigation.
• Coordinate work orders with the Facilities Management Division ( FMD ) for all building and landscape issues. This may include building repair & maintenance, HVAC repair, and pest control. Additional tasks that require work order coordination may consist of all hardscape materials and structures repair and maintenance.
• Maintain the interior plants in CED's Jackson Street, Tanner, and Denmark Hall.

Duties/Responsibilities
As FMG Director and Curator, the successful applicant will advise on and supervise the implementation of decisions that have short and long-term impacts on the garden resources, including the 2.5- acre plant collection and three historic structures. The kinds of decisions the FMG Director and Curator may address include:
• Advise and coordinate with the CED FMG Advisory Board to develop and implement plans and repairs to FMG facilities.
• Recommend aesthetic and functional changes to the CED FMG Advisory Board about garden resources.
• Coordinate with University Facilities Management Division ( FMD ) personnel for interior and exterior building conservation and maintenance.
• Establish, organize and curate garden drawings and records, including existing and future garden features (e.g., paving, plants, sculpture, etc.) via systematic and continuous record-keeping within spreadsheets, plant databases, and electronic and analog drawings. All information will be stored on CED servers and shared with the advisory board and future members/stakeholders.
• Promote the garden to the public and university communities
• Provide FMG history and horticultural information for students, faculty & visitors.
• Assist the CED Development Director with fundraising efforts related to the FMG .

Duties/Responsibilities
As FMG Event Coordinator the expectation is to coordinate and prepare the FMG for all University, College and Public events that utilize any FMG resources. Coordination and preparation include:
• Preparation, setting up, and storing CED's tent, tables, chairs, and other necessary equipment & materials on weekdays, weekends, and evenings.
• Negotiate rental contracts for groups requesting FMG resources for events and activities.
• Work with the CED Business Office to execute rental contracts for FMG resources.
• Supervise student workers who assist with FMG -related events.
• Monitor visitor use of FMG resources to maintain the integrity of the FMG plant collection, hardscape and structures and ensure the education and safety of visitors.
• As needed, provide FMG history and horticultural information for students, faculty & visitors. Typical University activities include classroom use, seminars, and non CED events related to various University groups. Routine College activities include CED classes, graduation, and honors day. Typical Public activities include occasional weddings and receptions.
