Our Statement on Racism and Commitment to Equality
We stand unequivocally with the Black and Brown people, and their allies, who are seeking justice, and with all who strive to bring about a true equality in the America we love.
Community Health Centers, with roots in the civil rights movement of the 1960s, have long recognized the impact systemic racism has on the health of our African-American patients.  There are significant and tenacious differences.  Some examples:  Black Americans are less likely to have health insurance and less access to mental health care services, while being more likely to suffer from chronic health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and asthma than non-Hispanic white Americans.  Black American mortality from cancer is higher than for any other racial or ethnic group.  Infant mortality is nearly twice that of non-Hispanic white Americans.
As one of more than 14,000 Community Health Centers providing care to 30 million Americans, Berks Community Health Center stands with the Black community and is dedicated to eliminating health disparities of all kinds.  Among those disparities is access to health care for people of color and others in poor and underserved communities across the country.  It is our mission to ensure that all in our community have access to health care, and to help our patients overcome the barriers that keep them from being healthy physically and mentally.
Why do these disparities still exist?  We believe that racism – embodied by the injustice that has persisted for generations in our health care, education, housing and employment systems – created this legacy of poor health outcomes for Black and Brown Americans.
Berks Community Health Center is determined to fight the effects of racism.  We pledge to do all we can to make a difference in our community.  We will challenge ourselves to examine our biases as an organization, and as individuals.  We will continue to uphold our commitment to care for all, without regard to race color, creed, ethnicity, sexual identity or orientation, or ability to pay.  We will support our diverse employee and patient community in actions and initiatives to combat racism, and all forms of discrimination.
