Community Health Centers, with roots in the civil rights movement of the 1960s, have long recognized the impact systemic racism has on the health of our African-American patients.  There are significant and tenacious differences.  Some examples:  Black Americans are less likely to have health insurance and less access to mental health care services, while being more likely to suffer from chronic health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and asthma than non-Hispanic white Americans.  Black American mortality from cancer is higher than for any other racial or ethnic group.  Infant mortality is nearly twice that of non-Hispanic white Americans.
