Preferred Qualifications
The curator should ideally have a horticulture/plant sciences/agriculture degree or otherwise
have significant horticultural experience managing an educational garden with all the skills that
implies.
Position Summary
The UGA Latin American Ethnobotanical Garden ( LAEG ) located on North Campus behind Baldwin Hall requires the services of an experienced part-time garden curator. The curator will be responsible for the upkeep/maintenance of the garden and the propagation of garden plant material. Oversight of the position will be provided by the UGA Latin American and Caribbean Studies Institute director. The incumbent should have significant horticultural knowledge and experience curating a large educational garden. In addition to basic garden maintenance duties (mulching, weeding, watering as needed, and pruning) the curator should also have experience propagating annual/perennial plants and carrying out planting during the growing season. The curator will in turn learn a great deal about the curation of dozens of Latin American plants and their cultural significance. As volunteers become available the curator will supervise their work in the garden. Flexibility will be provided for working weekdays or weekends, allowing the curator to meet the 15-hour/week schedule.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
• Knowledge of various propagation methods including seed stratification/scarification, stem cuttings from annuals and perennials, grafting, and the use of growth hormones.
• Additionally, the curator should have extensive plant identification skills of Southeastern native plants and plants of Latin America, as well as the ability to identify reseeded annuals and effectively manage and incorporate these plants into the garden design.

This is a year-round outdoor garden position, and duties typically include supervising and/or carrying out weeding, mulching, watering, pruning, etc. Working in heat and/or cold can be anticipated.

This position will involve general garden upkeep/maintenance: weeding/mulching/watering beds and prepping them for planting. The curator will carry out these duties and supervise volunteers tasked with carrying out such duties.

Horticultural duties: Planning and overseeing the selection, installation, and maintenance of plant collections, ensuring diversity and relevance to the garden's ethnobotanical mission and theme. Coordinating and supervising volunteers in tasks such as weeding, pruning, planting, watering, fertilizing, and pest control. Propagating native and Latin American plants from seed within the garden and from outside sources. Working with UGA staff and faculty to curate annual plantings to fit course syllabi. Monitoring and maintaining irrigation systems, drainage, and other infrastructure to ensure efficient operation. Offering with the garden coordinator seasonal garden tours on the ethnobotany of the Americas tailored to the specific interests and expertise of UGA staff, faculty, and outside groups, highlighting indigenous Americas plant uses and cultural significance. Regularly updating and archiving a database with new plant acquisitions, removals, taxonomic revisions, and relevant horticultural notes. Developing interpretive signs and QR codes.
