Position Summary
This position reports directly to the Facilities Manager. As a member of the Maintenance Team, based in Griffin, GA, this employee is responsible for manual work at the journeyman level. Work involves installation, operation maintenance, modification, services and repair of electrical systems, equipment fixtures, and related electro-mechanical systems in accordance with standard trade practices and applicable Electrical Industry Codes at the UGA Griffin Campus. The Electrician inspects and test elements of electrical systems to locate the diagnose faults and malfunctions, performs repairs through replacement of inoperative parts or re-wiring of circuits, and provides an estimate of repair and/or replacement costs beyond the capability to perform. The Electrician also calculates branch circuit loads, interprets electrical wiring diagrams and schematics, and determines methods and requirements for wiring circuits. Assignments are made in the form of written oral instructions and may be accompanied by sketches and blueprints, although most work results from inspections and troubleshooting.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
• Graduation from a standard vocational school with considerable experience as a journeyman electrician.
• Completion of a formal apprenticeship and valid electricians license.
• Ability to communicate and coordinate with Facilities Manager, Maintenance Foreman and Crew, and university personnel.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, interpret blueprints, sketches, and diagrams.
• Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods, equipment, materials, and tools of the electrical trade.
• Extensive knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
• Considerable knowledge of the National Electrical Code for electrical installation.
• Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment of the electrical trade.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and university personnel.
Physical Demands
• Indoor/Outdoor work environment with exposure to variable weather conditions.
• Continual use of computer technology.
• Prolonged standing and frequent bending, stooping, and reaching daily; working in confined spaces.
• Lifting and transporting materials and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. on frequent basis and up to 100 lbs. on an occasional basis.
• Full range of physical motion to manually operate equipment (light truck, bucket truck, forklift, backhoe, etc.), powered tools, and to navigate throughout campus including climbing stairs and working at variable height levels.
• Near-visual acuity, depth perception, field of vision and color vision to make electrical connections, solder and splice electrical wiring.
• Exposure to electrical systems, wiring, and currents that have the potential for serious injury if proper safety measures are not used.
• Exposure to chemicals, fumes, allergens or gases; working around and/or operating machinery and other electrical apparatuses.
• Work varied schedules according to departmental needs. May need to work some evenings and weekends as directed.
• Driving as needed to perform job duties.

• Inspect, service, repair and maintain lighting, power, and communication systems located on the UGA Griffin Campus.
• Repair and replace defective parts in motors, storage batteries, switchboards, controllers, switches, and other electrical fixtures and appliances.
• Test, locate, and repair electrical problems in electrical circuits and equipment.
• Install conduit, wires, pull boxes, switchboards, and switches in making additions, extensions, or alterations in electrical systems.
• Perform regular walk-throughs of all buildings/facilities to avoid any potential electrical problems and advise appropriate administrators of any alterations and repairs that may need to be handled.
• Upgrade outdated electrical systems in older buildings and field installations.
• Provide estimates of repair/replacement cost.

• Enforces electrical codes, safety regulations, rules and working conditions in the repair, installation, maintenance of university electrical systems.
• Advise and report any electrical issues across campus including conditions of wiring, effectiveness of lighting or suitability of equipment as needed.
• Guide other maintenance team members in applicable electrical procedures techniques.
• Safe operation and maintenance of state property including light trucks, bucket trucks, forklifts, and backhoes.
